At first glance, a roller coaster can seem like a 1,000 foot high, metal-encased death trap. For this exact reason, roller coasters supply a perfect chance for someone to test their courage. Having been the extremely cautious child that I was, it wasn’t surprising that I almost failed this test when I had been given the chance to take it. I was scared of loud noises, large insects, abstract concepts, not being cool, and, most importantly, death. With this predisposition, the The Mamba (a famous roller coaster at Worlds of Fun) was looking to be the scariest thing I’d had to face yet. But, what I failed to realize at the time was that being forced to conquer the insanely scary obstacle that lay before me would forever change my willingness to partake in risky endeavors, and would allow me to face future adversities with a new-found confidence.

My best friend was turning ten and wanted to celebrate with a trip to Worlds of Fun. So, with seven extremely energized young girls, a minivan and a-less-than-excited chaperon, we headed on our journey. After a loud car ride that seemed to last forever, we had finally arrived. We proceeded to buy our tickets, and quickly set off to ride every coaster we could fit into six hours. We started off well, making good time and hitting all of the mediocre rides that the park had. Once we became bored, we decided to sit down and share some pizza. This is when the idea of riding the Mamba was first introduced. While everybody else seemed to be exhilarated by the thought of getting on a ride that included a hill as tall as the average skyscraper, I was feeling just the opposite. To me, this idea sounded like a guaranteed way to die. But, while my fear of roller coasters was big, my fear of seeming like a whimp was even bigger, so I plastered on a fake smile of excitement and agreed to ride the Mamba with all of my
