In my freshman year of high school, I was placed into only one honors class, despite a strong academic record from junior high. Given my love of learning and excellence, I was exceedingly disappointed. Therefore, with the same resolution that I applied to my sports ambitions, I committed to my class time and homework. I met with my teachers when I had questions and tackled the material with energy and intensity. My efforts paid off!…

MLA Format Exercise The last English course I took was an online essay writing class. I honestly didn’t like the course very much. It just seemed like I would turn things in and then I would get feedback and the teacher would tell me exactly what to fix to get a better grade. Looking back at it I don’t feel like I grew academically through taking the course.…

Adrienne Rich, a feminist, gave a speech to the students of Douglas College at their convocation in 1977 called “Claiming an Education”. As you read the speech, you may see that she generally targeted it towards women, but everybody regardless of gender can learn from her speech, she writes, “The first thing I want to say to you who are students, is that you cannot afford to think of being here to receive an education; you will do much better to think of yourselves as being here to claim one.” (608). I believe she means thinking that you’re going to school because you have to and acting as if you have to get this education is not successful thinking. You should rather have the mindset that you are taking ownership of your education.…

When asked to write about and describe myself I often have to stop and ask myself how would someone who knows me, describe me to someone who doesn’t know me at all. I feel unique would probably be the most fitting adjective for describing Robert Yamane. I enjoy being challenged and never walk away from a problem that I know I can solve. Puzzles are great examples, but more importantly I want to be challenged in the classroom. Which is a huge reason why I want to attend Punahou.…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

Writing has proven to be a very serious struggle in my academic journey as a whole. I struggle with naturally choosing to write how I speak, and in an academic setting this proves to be very harmful to my grade. This un-academic style of writing cause me to make a 2 on the AP English exam when, if I would have simply taken my time and chosen to write more scholarly, I could have scored a far better grade on the exam and certainly would have been able to exempt English 1101. It is something I know I struggle with, yet I continue to do it. Furthermore, I believe enrolling in Professor Misty Soles English 1101 class truly helped shape my writing to a more collegiate standard.…

Chickering 's Theory first developed in the 1950’s and 1960’s focusing on student development. Since its revision in the 1990’s with Reisser, the student development theory continues to be relevant with students today and further research on how it applies to gender, race, sexual orientation continues to keep it relevant to student development of different populations and students in general. In observing and applying Chickering’s Theory myself I interviewed three students. I asked three simple questions such as “How is your week going?”…

In my experience in reading and writing, there has been numerous Literacy Sponsors in their own form. While growing up, my parents acted as my first literacy sponsors and helped me through reading and writing then throughout school.
