A Rose for Emily
“A Rose for Emily” is centered on an old and lonely lady who gets stuck in her timeframe. Her extremely controlling father died several years ago leaving her confused. Her house has transformed to be one of the most hideous looking homes located on the once most prestigious street within the city. Previously, the house used to be elegant and white complete with scrolled balconies. This paper will look at the literary analysis for “A Rose for Emily.”
The story takes place in a small town, south of the United States. The plot of the story is divided into five parts. The first part opens at the time when Emily Grierson dies. Some of these include symbolism, foreshadowing, and flashback. Symbolism is depicted in Emily’s house which is a monument, just like her. It represents the endurance and preservation of tradition which now seems out of place in the changing society. Additionally, Emily’s house is symbolic of mental illness, alienation, and death. It is a symbolic shrine to the living past. The sealed room upstairs is her carefully guarded macabre trophy room where she preserves the body of Homer, who she would not allow to leave. The watch in the story also symbolizes the crucial events that occur in the life of Emily and how she became stuck in time following the death of her father. Similarly, the arsenic which Emily purchases from the drug store represents death. The matrimonial bed that was discovered in the locked room by the townspeople symbolizes Emily’s thoughts about marriage regardless of what the townspeople thought. Moreover, Emily’s strand of hair represents her inner life. She is committed to living life by her rules and not requiring the approval of other people. In Emily’s world, even murder is acceptable. The hair strand symbolizes the final vestige of life left to suffer and decay just like
