Dearest sister,
I am glad to have finally heard from you, hearing of you through mothers letters wasn’t enough and Im sure she has kept you from many of the harsh details of my writing. Sincerest apologies for my delay in response as I seldom have the time to sit and write. I hope that Liz is doing well and winning her fight against her leukimia, send her my best wishes. Say hello to everyone. I am writing to you now in the dead of night. Im in the trenches aquainted by my brother soldiers, and of course these wretched rats. Oh how I pray for just one night with out them spoiling our food supplies and worstening the already unbearable stench. You can imagine with the weather getting colder the awful conditions of our trenches that we have to live in. trench foot is rapidly growing

I wish I could tell you I was doing well, but sadly I cannot. The conditions in the trenches have only gotten worse with lice infestations, I haven’t been privalleged with a shower in weeks, and most of the men I came and trained with are unnamed soldiers dead in no mans land. We approached the enemies in a whole new way as the battle of the somme shed light on better ways to plan and to loose less men. 12 September, 1917 As I write this, the enemy is shelling the trench I’m sitting in. The enemy has been shelling us sporadically for the past several days. The enemy will shell us for several hours, then stop and then resume the shelling later. Heavy shelling has left the area surrounding the trench pock marked with craters.…

19th July, 1916 Everything today is bustle and hurry this morning for we are getting fired up for our charge. Our helmets are being inspected to ensure that there are no flaws in them. Extra ammunition has been served out making in all 250 rounds per man. Pink patches about 6 inch squares have been sewed onto all of our soldiers to ensure our artillery can distinguish us between from the enemy. Some of my mates around me look like jockeys with the different colours.…

My Dearest Nancy, I am writing to you from the trenches in my “dug-out”. It is cold and wet. Winter has not been kind to us out on the Western Front. Many of our chaps have gotten what they call “trench foot”. A nasty disease where your feet turn blue and swell up – even go numb.…

I hope this letter finds you and the rest of the family in good health. My parents and I are doing well, but we continue to worry and pray for our friends and neighbors who are either serving in the Union or have loved ones who are serving. My friend James was considering enlisting as a private in the New Jersey regiment, but a letter from his friend, George B. Wright urging him not to enlist has James reconsidering his decision. In the letter, George talks of the fatigue, and in his words, “your health would break down before you had been in service a month” (Lurie pg. 160).…

I am writing to thank you for your service to the United States and wish you a happy Veterans Day. The magnitude of your selflessness and courage is incomprehensible to me, and though these may be trite words, I sincerely mean what I say. I can think of no experience more inherently laudable and worthy of profound respect than serving in the armed forces. What compounds my gratitude of your service specifically is your modesty in discussing your service. Indeed, I believe you mentioned your service only once or twice in class.…
