As the first generation living in America, I have dealt countless problems in harmony to the new environment, especially the language. However, my family tried to give me the chance to go to school. In other words, they sacrificed for me. I used to see my mom stayed up until 2 at the morning, tried to watch English lecture youtube, although it was extremely hard for her to learn the language. I want to take this opportunity to thanks my wonderful parents and others, who help me make my story and my dream become true.

As I approached the check-in agent, I could feel my stomach pulsating as I held back the tears, trying to be brave in front of mother and my family members. I looked in my mother's brown eyes and found no trace of tears shed. This was not her first experience of saying goodbye to a family member. She had experienced it with her siblings, my father and my sister. Now me. "…

Parents strive to make their children’s lives better before they arrive in this world and continue to do that until their last breath. They commit to a plethora of sacrifices for their children that are absolutely unbelievable and overwhelming. As for my lovely parents, they are the perfect candidates because they have given up their completely fine lives to come to America to simply give me and my brother a better and successful life. They did not even think for a second how it could negatively or positively impact their lives as well as my brother’s and mines. More importantly, they just want to give me the opportunity that they would never imagine to get, themselves.…

Have you ever noticed how in the stores you will see a plethora of Halloween costumes, decorations and the like but immediately following Halloween, you see Christmas themed decorations all over and very little to commemorate Thanksgiving? The most I've seen have had leaves and maybe a cornucopia and really only enough scattered throughout the store to fill a half to one whole aisle. It seems that our national holiday is only truly named and observed within "leaked" black friday ads, alerting you to when the advertised deals start. This never really bothered me in the past. As a little girl Thanksgiving was all about the Macy's Parade, the dog show, food, and the countdown until santa claus and presents galore.…

The Dominican Republic; a place where you can count the opportunities of success with one hand. If you didn’t have a connection to someone in the government, the chances of obtaining a job were improbable; this was common knowledge amongst the people of my country. I often found myself eavesdropping on my friends conversing about escaping to America. As tempting as America sounded, I knew illegally entering was wrong. I was 17 years old when the connotation of “America” changed for me; my father came home with wonderful news: we had been given the opportunity as a family to move to America.…

Coming from a underserved and low income community, I hope to start the dreams that many in my community wished they had. Of course, it would change their lives, however it does change our community. My parents didn’t have the life they always wished for while living in Vietnam. Growing up, I realized that was the lifestyle I could’ve had if I were to be in my parents shoes. Having access to education is such a powerful tool, but like most including my parents, they had no choice when it comes to education.…

I was born in Mexico in 1996 and when I was just 11 months old my parents decided to immigrate to the United States to try and give me and my brother a better life. When I was younger I never questioned why I’d have to wake up at 4 in the morning to go to my babysitter’s house; it wasn’t until I was around 5 years old that I realized my mom, brother, and me were all living in this country illegally, my dad was the only one who was a legal resident. My mom and dad worked long hours in the Florida orange groves to be able to provide a better life for me and my brother; despite the bad conditions they worked in they were never discouraged because they knew that in the end any sacrifices made would be worth it if it meant a better future for us.…

Last November, a week before Thanksgiving, I was listening to the morning radio talk show The Woody Show and the hosts were talking about how excited they were for the Thanksgiving feast. They all went around and shared what was their perfect meal for that day. It ranged from fried turkey, to stuffing, cornbread, green bean casserole, and towards the end the hosts argued about cranberry sauce. However, they all agreed that pumpkin pie was essential to the perfect meal. I found it very interesting that while they argued about the way the meal was executed, they all agreed on the basic components to the meal-I didn’t.…

Do you think students should have their full week off for Thanksgiving? Well I know I do and my plan is in this essay is to show you why we should have our full weekend for Thanksgiving. My first reason is we shouldn't because if you take Monday and Tuesday you mess up family's that have planned to go somewhere they can't and they have to cancel and the bad part is those family's might not get their money back. And my lead to this is one day in fourth grade we had 30 students and like fifteen checked out on a day that was a Student/Staff holiday because we used our last snow day.…
