All hell broke loose. The room turned upside down, on its back, inside out, went crazy, flipped out. Other words, other clichés. Fear erupted like a seismic shift in the earth’s surface, and then charged and pierced and saturated the room like smoke. Fear – a good friend to me that night – chased me toward the back door.…
The entrance appeared to lead into a tomb. As I began walking towards the entryway and prying open the slabs of blocks blocking it, years of built up dirt rose from its resting place and hit my face. I began coughing, but as I began to regain my posture, my eyes clouded in amazement. I…
What is a God? Is He a higher being someone made up to feel better when people did something bad? Or the “person” that is up in the sky waiting for us to join Him after we die? Or a real, loving, caring higher power whose always has your back? A Christian God is a God who holds all morals and who does not want to see His people hurting, but wanting them to succeed and have a great life.…
BOOM! You hear a scream, not just any scream, but your mom’s scream. The ceiling collapses on you, drywall bits infiltrate your eyes and your vision betrays you; you cannot see a thing. You continue to hear the screams of your family, no longer just your mom, but your younger siblings. All of your senses are on high alert—you hear so many noises you cannot pick out any one noise.…
I sit there in shock at the sight of seeing my brother who's standing before me, wearing a black bulletproof vest and army boots. The sounds of screams and guns going off can still be heard within my apartment and...outside? Even with the light shinning in my face and the room completely dark, I can see that he's covered with all this protective gear and... As I was about to open my mouth, Duncan grabs me and pulls me out of the apartment.…
“Pew-pew-pew--chk-chk”, were the sounds going back and forth from two innocent and audacious children playing in the backyard. Until they noticed a queer view between the wooden spaced fence. Matt’s orbital is tremendously keen, so he noticed a filthy pool behind a dilapidated house as he pressed his frontal into the fence. Within seconds, it aroused his sense of curiosity.…
The sky is blue, morning blue, when the sun is just rising, at about 6 o’clock. The chilly Autumn morning made me feel safe as I peered out the dew lined window. Leaves blew across the street, yet not too many because it's early in the season. Its nice to look out, seeing the smoke come out of the chimneys from the warm homes where everyone is asleep this sunday morning. Then out of the corner of my eye, amongst the beautiful fall scenery and warm houses was a guy, creeping out the back mill door.…
Her blood runs ice-cold as the slam of the front door shakes the delicate frame of the house and threatens to bring it crumbling down . NO, NO, NO. He is home. He is a monster.…
Baseball Baseball has always been one of my favorite sports, and it will always be the longest sport I’ve played. A total of 9 years in Khoury league and 2 years in high school, so all in all I have been playing this sport almost all my life. I started baseball with the Red Bud T-ball team, the team had a count of 15 people including me and excluding the coaches. Those 15 kids playing on that team became some of my bestest friends and greatest teammates to have. Most of them ended up being with me until we couldn't play khoury league anymore, and then only about 3 or 5 of them played school ball with me.…

It all started one morning I was getting up and going in the kitchen to get coffee. I heard a silent groan and I got scared. I went and checked what it was and I saw a man who looked like he got burnt. So I slowly went back in my room and woke up my husband Junior. When I woke him up he was confused on why I was so scared.…
Many of William Faulkner’s works may be catagorized under the Southern Gothic genre. In this essay, I will explore and prove that the novel “A Light in August” and the short story “A Rose for Emily” are indeed, Southern Gothic writings. Characteristics of Southern Gothic writings are presented in these stories by Faulkner’s use of the lurid murders of Joe Christmas and Joanna Burden in “A Light in August”, and Homer Barron in “A Rose for Emily”, we also see disillusioned and reclused personalities in characters such as Rev. Hightower and Emily Grierson, and finally we see the topic of race portrayed in these stories as a negative, crippling force in society. One of the more familiar characteristics of Southern Gothic literature involves grotesque,…
Echoes Ringing of the phone echoed through the house, jolting me from sleep. Climbing out of bed, groping blindly for the light switch. Shoes in the middle of the floor trip me, and I fall. The phone clangs again. It is down the hall, on a stand.…
In Mary Shelley’s book Frankenstein, the main character, Victor Frankenstein is a scientist whose inability to see past his own ego ultimately leads him to create a monster. Not fully aware of the consequences of his creating a new race of humans, he spends his entire life trying to destroy the same creation. Victor’s impulses to create such a monstrosity directly correlate to a part of his mental state that houses emotions of sex and aggression. His incomparable urge to surpass his ego in his thirst for this romantic knowledge ultimately leads to his downfall.…
I continued to scream. Nearby, I heard the faint flicker of a nearby light. I recognized the sound as the hallway light and concluded that my mother must be on her way. My sweaty palms met with the thin paint of my wall.…
