Late in the evening of Thursday, June 25th, 18 year old Samuel Ellis, of North Potomac, lost control of his 2006 Acura TSX, as he attempted to drive around a sharp bend in the 13800 block of Dufief Mill Road. The speed limit at this location is 35 mph and local police authorities stated that based on the evidence at the accident scene, Ellis was going over 65 mph.
The conservative posted speed limit is partly because of the deep bend in the road plus, Travilah Elementary School is also located in the same block just across the road from the accident scene. Ellis, who was wearing a seat belt, was hospitalized with critical injuries. The other front seat passenger, a 17 year old male Wootton High School student, whose name was not released, was wearing a seat belt and survived the crash with minor injuries.
The two 18 year old males in the back seat were not wearing their seat belts and died instantly at the scene. Alexander Murk, of Potomac, and Calvin Jia-Xing Li, of Rockville were graduating classmates with Ellis. All three had graduated one month earlier from Thomas S. Wootton High School in Rockville, where they excelled at sports, and all three were headed to different colleges. Of the hundreds of high schools in Maryland, Wootton is ranked #4 in the state by U.S. News Best High Schools and the school has a Gold Medal rating.
