The information they have on you has to be accessible to you, though you may have to request/pay for it. You can ask that you not have your information used to directly market to you. If the company uses automated systems to make decisions about you or for them to do with you or your information, you’re allowed to ask that the decision be reconsidered (but it won’t necessarily change if it is). You can ask that, if you notice an error in your information (for instance, Helen’s car insurance company believes she’s had a serious crash that was your fault last year when she didn’t) you can ask that the information be rectified so that it’s fully correct. If a company or person breaches your rights or the act in a way that has damaged you somehow, you can ask for compensation.
Secure
It’s companies’ responsibility to keep the personal data they have on you in a secure way so that it does not get accessed by anyone who shouldn’t have access to the information. They can do this by having encryption and password protect areas and servers that hold the information in question. If the company had a reasonable amount of security and yet still the information was stolen on you it may not be considered their fault.
