Cultural Essay My mother was sitting at the grand piano in the living room. Her fingers gracefully danced across the keys, playing the familiar tune of Beethoven's “Moonlight Sonata”. I was about three years old at the time when my mother taught me how to play the piano. It was her passion when she was young and it soon became mine. Since then, music had become a big part of my life. My mother was always successful in school when she was young. She was always in the top five of her grade. My father on the other hand always got in trouble. My cultural identity is Filipino and American. The main focus of my culture is on music, academics, humility, and discipline of the Asian culture. Music is a big part of my life. My mother taught me to play the piano when I was three. Everyone in my family is into music, my mom plays the piano, my dad plays the acoustic guitar and the bass, and my sister sings. Music had become the way I express myself. I play the piano when I’m upset, angered, happy, or excited. It became my way of releasing stress. My mother had impacted my choice of music genres. If you step out of line once, then you will get humiliated in front of the class. It was really strict there. My parents had told me stories about their school life in high school. It was really tough for them because the teacher would spank their hands or bum with a meter stick if they didn’t finish their homework or if they didn’t do too well on a test. They had lived a hard and poor life back in the Philippines, which is what makes me more grateful to have what I have today. The discipline in America is more laid back and not as strict. I have adapted to the American way of disciplinary actions. The worst thing that could happen to a student is being
