A masterful concert dedicated to Appalachian Spring which impressed the audience of the College is the primary focus of the following discussion.
On the third of October 2013, the members of DVC Philharmonic Orchestra, including former students, performed Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring. The conductor was the college professor, Owen Lee. The visitors of the college could listen and enjoy Copland’s work in one of the music classrooms.
For the first time, Appalachian Spring was played in 1944 and became instantly famous. This piece includes thirteen parties and belongs to the chamber music. The composer wrote it for a ballet; however, the musicians of Diablo Valley College played only musical composition without ballet performance. The Library of Congress was the first place where the musical work was performed and had a great success. However, the DVC chamber orchestra also performed this composition well. Moreover, the musical form of Copland’s Appalachian Spring is the orchestral suite consisting of eight parts. The second section has Allegro tempo and started by the unison of the strings in A minor. This theme was quite assertive. It often appeared in different variations. The seventh part “Doppio Movimento” was calm and flowing. It included Shaker theme and its five variations. Solo clarinet played the theme taken from Edward D. Andrews Shaker melodies collection. The melody of a theme was lyrical with the well-marked climax. On the contrary, the tune of the seventh piece was sharper and more piercing. Moreover, both melodies had bright

On Sunday, June 21st, I went to see the Dallas Symphony Orchestra perform “The Music of John Williams and Hollywood’s Great Composers” at Stonebriar Community Church in Frisco. The concert was held in the church’s worship room at 6:30pm. This was a great place for the DSO to perform because the audience and the orchestra were very close and, in a way, felt more personal. The show included fourteen pieces: “Overture to Captain Blood by Korngold, ‘Tara’ – A Short Poem for Orchestra from Gone with the Wind by Steiner, arr.…

World War II spanned the years of 1939-1945 and made a substantial impact on the dance world. In finding sources to apply towards researching World War II’s influence on Appalachian Spring (1944), I immediately went to YouTube. The iconic film of Appalachian Spring is a great tool to use when looking at the choreography, set, costumes, and musical score. The set, designed by Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988) is very simple, but is highlighted by it’s functionality of one side of an exterior wall, a bench, fencing, a wooden chair, and a slanted boulder in the yard (Aloff 26). Martha Graham (1894-1991) whose choreography in this particular piece is very pedestrian, meant to simulate a very common American tale.…

To create this pleasing mood, Copland uses consonant intervals and a simple and clear melody. The melody, “Simple Gifts,” is from a hymn sung by a Christian group called the Shakers who embraced simple living and folk culture. Copland uses portions of the tune and adds a little variety to it and sometimes there is imitation that can be heard in the melodic phrases. He uses flutes, clarinets, bassoons, strings, and a piano for this piece. The opening closing music of the ballet is quiet which makes it have a sense of resolution, bringing the piece full…

Taylor Mac was unlike anything I have ever seen at Mass MoCA. I’ve seen other work-in-progress performances (Big Dance Theater and another Sundance Theater performance, I believe), but it was hard to believe that this particular performance was work in progress. The entire show was planned so beautifully and Taylor Mac, was so easily adaptable that, despite his claims of it not being a polished show, everything that happened on the stage seemed intentional and very fitting. It made all five hours all the more enjoyable. Mass MoCA Spring 2016 program book describes the performance as “strange music history” and “world’s wildest history lesson” and they are not wrong.…

Also, tremolando relates to the tempo change, extremes of register ascending and descending sequences the cello and double bass therefore, creating syncopated rhythms. Overall the rhythm is driving and can be unpredictable in places, for example. Adding to this, the sonata form is uneasy as it seems the actual second theme appears in the development section instead of the exposition section as the first motif sounds as if it is being repeated and the recapitulation is just a repetition of the…

On Thursday, September 29th at 7:30pm I attended the LU Symphony Orchestra Concert in Towns Auditorium. Prior to the concert beginning, I noticed a wide variety of instruments on the stage. There were some instruments that I did not know the name of but for the most part, I knew a large majority of the string, woodwind and brass instruments presented. The last time that I went to a symphony was when I was in elementary school, so attending an orchestral concert in college was a much different experience. I was fascinated by the diversity of instruments.…

He also included some folk elements such as the polka dance in the wedding. At the beginning of the piece, listeners can imagine the rippling figure of the two springs from the hills from the running notes by the flutes and clarinets. The lower strings then join in later on and lead the music into the river where the songlike river theme is heard in a minor key. Repeated notes in the strings (Figure 1) are heard, indicating a rustic folk tune while depicting a peasant wedding feast where the people are dancing the polka which is a Bohemian dance by the river…
