How To Write A Community Observation

For the second section of my portfolio, I decided to observe several different people eating, in two different settings. I decided to first observe my friends, then my family, being that they are both very different. First, I went to Dunkin Doughnuts with my friends, just to get some drinks. Upon arriving, the atmosphere was very relaxed, and there were numerous people having casual conversations. After we all received our drink, we went to sit outside on the patio, to enjoy the fresh air. Once we sat down, we immediately started asking each other about how our week was. Privacy is something that many people value, and it was shocking to notice that my friends really did not care what other people thought of them. While we were having this conversation, there was a lot of laughing, and many people around us kept looking over to see what we were doing. This conversation lasted for the rest of the hour that we spent at Dunkin Doughnuts. When we were leaving, I noticed that Alexis was upbeat and ready to go have more fun, Tara and I on the other hand were tired and cold from sitting outside. So after our get together, Alexis acted as f she had energy, but I would not say she was restored because, it was almost as if it was a high off of the caffeine. After about an hour, she became very tired. Tara and I on the other hand were not restored from our hot chocolate, and we were ready to go to sleep. First, when observing my family eat, there was a lot of food to share. When observing my friends, everyone had their own drinks, and it was not enough to fill them, like a dinner would. Second, while their was social interactions in both scenarios, the social interaction with my friends was more about boys and school, while the social interaction with my family was more about what we were going to do as a family for the holidays. Lastly, my family was more restored after their meal than my friends were. Several factors that had a affect on this was the amount of food, the time we were together, and the type of conversation. Through participation in this experience, I learned that not everyone’s social interaction is the same. Often times, having dinner with parents will result in different conversations, then going out for coffee with friends. I also learned that the levels of restoration between people and meals also vary. This relates to the course because, restoration is a part of everyone’s areas of occupations. Eating is done my everyone multiple times a day, and often people do not realize that while they are eating, they are most likely being restored in some
