When this problem arises we must remove ourselves and refer another clinician to the client. To be culturally complement clinicians must be able to understand the LGBT community. We must be able to be aware of the questions we ask when we interview them. In Tomi case we must be able to understand how children and teens go through this problem. Teich being a transgender men mentions in his book that the process of coming out is critical. I have seen through Sarah what it means to be a transgender women and how society forces people to suppress their gender identity. But like sexual fluidity it hard for me to accept the fact that human beings are complex and they are many factors that drive us to become who we are. So being a comfortable cisgender straight male I feel no oppression because I fit the norm because it is what society accepts. But again I believe that by realizing that there is diversity in all aspects of life we become acceptive of those we considered different because of the exposure to new ideas.…

I met Mark through a high school friend at the local bar The Stonewall, which I have since found out that The Stonewall is known to be Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender friendly, well more so than other bars around Stillwater, Oklahoma. Mark has known he was a homosexual since middle school; middle school is a time of extreme mental, psychological, and physical change for every child growing…

As discussed previously, the referral of a client based solely on his/her sexual orientation is not only illegal, it is also unethical for mental health professionals (APA, 2010). On the other hand, the APA Ethics Code (2010) states it is unethical for a mental health professional to provide services outside of their boundaries of competence. The contradiction of these two standards lead to an ethical dilemma that many mental health professionals face. Shiles (2009) created a set of eight questions examining the appropriateness of referring a client. These questions have provided mental health professionals with an additional resource to facilitate a solution for this ethical dilemma.…

The important key here is only to talk about inflammatory or discriminatory issues where they are important therapeutically for the progress of your client. By explaining this concept to the client and talking about them is purely designed to help your client move on from any pain they have suffered. This may even involve asking straight questions, such as ‘How did it feel to be called a sexist etc. The client may need to say how they felt when being called that unpleasant term or name.
