Guy Montag is a fireman who lives in the 24th century. At those days, being a fireman requires burning books and the houses of the owners' of those books. At the beginning, Montag meets with a 17-year-old girl, Clarisse McClennan who is his new neighbor. As the girl is beautiful and young, Montag begins to hate his wife and likes this girl. His wife, Millie is an addict of television. She even sees the life like the television programs and one day it's said on TV that an atomic war will occur soon. After that day, Montag begins to question why the government doesn't want people to get detailed information and why he burns books. For the first time in his life, he wonders and questions. Then, one day when he is at work, he is sent to a house with books to burn it. He burns the house with books in it, but then he realizes an old woman who is the owner of the house doesn't want to go out from the burning house. In spite of all the efforts of Montag, she doesn't want let her books burn and tells Montag to stop the fire or let her burn and die. At that moment, for the second time, Montag questions his life again and wonders "What can there be in a book that important?" and steals a book before it burns at all and escapes.
