Part 1 of The Metamorphosis begins by introducing the reader to Gregor Samsa, who awakens to discover that he has transformed into a large insect. As he looks around his room searching for a clue as to what has occurred, the reader discovers that Gregor Samsa is a traveling salesman. In an attempt to forget this terrible transformation, Gregor tries to fall back asleep but fails due to the new shape of his back which causes him to rock from side to side. He begins to think about the difficult job he has and the consequence of constant traveling where building lasting friendships is a challenging task. He thinks about leaving his employer but is then reminded of the debt his parents acquired. Gregor then realizes that he is both late for work
