Forgiveness can mean many things, but true forgiveness is releasing the feelings of vengeance and resentment towards a person. Justice can also have multiple meanings, but true justice means when an offender repents on their wrongdoings and reconciles with their victims. The Socratic practice, as presented in The Apology through Socrates’s explanation of it and his way of implementing it, relies on its implementer being perceived as truthful and disinterested in wealth, while simultaneously questioning the perceived knowledge amongst individuals of authority. Socrates’s form of philosophical discussion forced the burden of the conversation upon his opponents though this questioning. In the Republic, Socrates provides an apt example of the Socratic practice as he argues against Thrasymachus. The first and foremost aspect of Socrates’s rhetoric is that he claims to speak only the truth. In the Apology, Socrates begins his speech by saying to his fellow Athenians that “From me you will hear the whole truth,…

This was a well known symbolic strategy that has a major impact on the Indigenous peoples. The main message of the speech was to apologize to the indigenous for all the mistreatment that they caused in the past and the effect that it had on them and their families. This was a way to try and remove barriers and build a better relationship and bring reconciliation one step closing by realising their mistakes and sincerely apologizing for all the mistreatment caused. On August 17, 1998 President Bill Clinton delivered a speech to the American public addressing an inappropriate relationship with a former White House Intern, Monica Lewinsky. In comparison to Robert M. Eisingers “The Political Non-Apology” Clinton 's public apology has some of the characteristics of a full apology but, is predominantly a non-apology. Although, acknowledges the offense committed, he minimizes his offense throughout the speech and plays the victim card in attempts to potentially restore his reputation. At some points he attempts to apologize, but his choice of words diminish the effectiveness of his apology and his form of non-apologizing is used to his advantage. Clinton appears to meet some of the criteria of a full apology;…

Sometimes I wonder why, out of every city, town, and suburb in the entire country of the United States, my grandmother chose to move to Lynn, Massachusetts. A city otherwise rich in history, but unluckily dubbed over by an ingloriously annoying jingle, “Lynn, Lynn, city of sin, you’ll never come out the way you came in.” I heard it chanted through elementary school hallways, mocked by middle school kids, and hummed by high schoolers. You would think its omnipresence would keep away travelers, but, then again, my grandmother didn’t speak English. She came over from the Dominican Republic thirty-six years ago, with my mother and her five other kids.…

An Overdue Apology from the Nation An official Apology to Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islander had been postponed for 11 years after the inquiry into children removal report Bringing Them Home (1997) was released during the Howard Government (1996-2007). The report recommended for an apology as a first step to heal the wounds of victims because of human rights violations (Human Right and Equal Opportunity Commission 246). However, Prime Minister John Howard rejected to apologize for indigenous people on behalf of the nation and stressed that delivering a symbolic apology and letting Australians of this generation burden with the blame and a sense of national guilt would not facilitate successful reconciliation (Gunstone 80). Instead, he advocated…

Juneteenth, when the last of slaves were finally free, makes 150 years of being around. Today, Barack Obama, the first black president to live in the White House could make one of his biggest movements in his presidency: apologize for the land of the free. Obama being the son of a Kenyan father and a white mother who passed away years after slavery ended, has some ancestral baggage on slavery. Therefore, many believe no other man could make a more inspiring apology about America’s past sins. Many may argue that an acknowledgment of the wrongs done by the nation have power all alone.…
