Reflexes are a big part of physical development, for example a baby will suck when faced with a nipple, or turn their heads when they hear a voice. Or grasping a finger that is placed in their hand. By 5 months the baby may be able to roll over onto its tummy. Motor skills in a 15 month old may result in the toddler being able to stand and possibly even walk. By the age of 1, most children can respond to common words and can recognise the names of things such as ‘mummy’. They start to show communication by taking an interest in the pictures and words in books and enjoy the prospect of music and nursery rhymes. From the age of 2, toddlers become much more verbal, until 18-24 months toddlers communication is non verbal, and communication is done through play and sound effects.
