Keep Commands Short and Simple: Dogs are good at learning one and two-word commands, but they cannot understand or follow complex sentences. If you train your dog to sit and stay the words “sit” and “stay” will acquire meaning. Then, they should be able to follow your instructions (at least some of the time).
