Purpose
The purpose of the experiment was to find out if the atlatl truly does increase the distance that a dart can travel, compared to just using an arm, on average. If it does increase the distance, than this knowledge could be used to understand how using the atlatl affected the way paleolithic Europeans survived, as there would have likely been less accidents killing prey, as they could be farther away, but more deaths between themselves if they fought against one another.
I would like to know on average, how much the atlatl increases the distance by having volunteers throw the atlatl multiple times, and then calculate the averages between both each individual person and between all the people together. It would also be interesting to find how each individual part of the atlatl changes the different aspects of the effectiveness of the atlatl though this could only be discovered once completing the main experiment. Pure curiosity also plays a factor as a purpose for this experiment. I am truly interested whether or not the atlatl can increase the distance that a dart can go compared to throwing it with just an arm and if so by how much. I would also like to further develop this experiment at a later time by comparing things such as how the …show more content…
It is believed that the atlatl greatly increased people's chance of survival, as it gave them a great advantage over both other people, as well as over prey they hunted. The atlatl was first created sometime during the 17,000’s B.C., and is believed to be among one of the first compound weapons to be created by Europeans. It later traveled across the Bering land bridge which connected Asia and North America, and since became used by many other
