How To Tell The Story We Lie

When I was a little kid, my brother and I were playing on a recliner in front of a window. Our mother was down in the basement at the time. Our goal was to see how much we could get the chair to rock. After what seemed like an hour of playing, we managed to rock the chair so much that it went through the window. Once that happened, we had to decide what to do. Run or confess to the situation, to be dishonest or not. My brother ran to his room. He decided to be dishonest. I on the other hand, walked downstairs and told my mother the situation. Of course she freaked out, we just smashed through her large window. We tell people we are having a great day, when it was actually terrible. We also tell people they look good when they actually don’t. It is said that “we lie, on average, three times during a routine ten-minute conversation” (MARIA quoting Robert Feldman). The simple lies like having a great day are only the tip of the iceberg. There are many different types of lies. There are lies we tell to get out of trouble (like when my brother ran from telling the truth), lies we tell to keep the peace between people, and there are also lies we tell to make situations seem better than they actually are. Although these are not all of the types of lies possible they are a few of them. The kind of lies that you don’t think much about are called white lies. They are called white lies because in popular culture it was thought that white meant good (“World”). They are spoken for many different reasons, Such as using them as though they were acts of altruism or in order to spare his or her feelings (Marino). However the real question is how poisonous is lying? When a person tells a white lie they are lying, but this kind of lying is said to be "morally permissible"(Marino). This is based off of a study where one thousand people were asked if lying was acceptable, as well as if telling white lies were ok. This study showed that "more than two out of three respondents claimed that white lies were morally permissible" (Marino). However white lies are not the only type of lying. In the same study it was discovered that a little less than fifty percent believed that it was ok to lie. Lying can be used with good intentions and bad intentions. An example of good intentions "is when you're lying to protect someone from serious harm" (Marino). An example of bad intentions is when you lie to get out of trouble. In January 27, 2008 , a twelve-year-old girl went missing. On February 9th she was found dead. The girls mother Penny Boudreau was first to discover that she was missing.
