The nuclear bomb would cause a depletion of the ozone, which will cause “ an abundance of UV radiation to seep through into the atmosphere” (Roberts, 2007, p. 1) and it is extremely important to stay protected from it as Dr Jenkins lives in a cave that protects him from the radiation. To prolong the importance of protection in a nuclear winter, it is also extremely important to have thick clothing and fire to keep warm because of the major decrease in temperature. Weaponry is also very important because with all of the grocery stores are gone, it is a survival of the fittest and even a small “piece of lead pipe” (Clark,1941, p. 177) or a pocket knife can be at most value. Also in a Nuclear winter all of the electronics are shut down, so all of the entertainment comes from books, music and little toys. Having entertainment is hugely important, as in the short story Dr. Jenkins has his portable phonograph for his entertainment. Lastly to survive the winter a supply of clean water is needed as water is a life requirment and also the clean water can provide sanity, which can protect you from colds and infections.
Nuclear weaponry is the one of the most devastating forces ever created, and the repercussions of it creates horrible living conditions, including a winter that need the proper survival supplies and knowledge. Clearly in the story “ The Portable Phonograph”
