Vesa came to the table with boxes and glass pebbles on it. She separated a handful of the pebbles, correctly counted twelve of them and placed them in a basket. An adult asked her to choose four boxes and how she divide the pebbles equally. Vesa chose boxes and placed one pebble at the time in each box until she run out of the pebbles, and then counted how many she had in each box: “There is three in each box.” The adult give her more pebbles and asked her to equally divide them between five boxes. She divided pebbles between boxes, counted how many she has in each box, wrote the correct number on a note paper and stick it on a box. When all boxes were counted and had the numbers on them, Vesa realised that all boxes do not have the same number of pebbles: “This is not right. Let’s try again, I am going to do eleven, there are two boxes with eleven on it.” Vesa put all pebbles in a basket and counted up to eleven pebbles before placing them in a box: “I have only eight for the last box, this is not enough.” The adult asked her how many pebbles she needs to make eleven: “I need three more” she took a few pebbles and continued to count from where she stopped: “9, 10, and 11. Now all of them have eleven.”
