In 2009 roughly 2500 people used Lehigh valley homeless shelters last year. Account conducted by The Allentown board found 33 people unsheltered in the region on the coldest night of the year. Shelter residents commented they were there for reasons such as lack of affordable housing, accessible housing, cost of transportation, domestic violence, cost of child care, lack of health insurance, mental health issues, and the cost of food. A vast majority of the homeless are victims of unemployment and personal crisis. I chose this issue because it’s important for everyone to have shelter.
