How To Show Injustice In To Kill A Mockingbird

In Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird,” one of the main themes of the novel is that everyone has a reason behind what they do, even if that reason is not clear to others, or even to themselves. This is a message that Atticus tries to instill in his children, Jem and Scout throughout the entire novel, as they grow and their childhood black and whites begin to mix into grays. As new instances of injustices appear in their lives, children begin to see the world in ways they never did before. For instance after Jem had to venture back into the Radley yard for the second time to retrieve the pants he had to sacrifice in order to escape Mr. Nathan the first time Scout tries to sympathize with his quiet moodiness. “As Atticus once advised me to do, I tried to climb into Jem’s skin and walk around in it: if I had gone alone to the Radley Place at two in the morning,my funeral would have been held the next afternoon. It’s a very good message to teach children, that just because someone does things that you may question or disapprove of that doesn’t mean they did it for no reason because at the very least everyone feels.
