How To Shape My Identity

Improved Essays
In my visual, I included a variety of text, images, symbols and photos which are presented in a way that represents the factors and items that shape my identity in a globalized world. At the top of my representation, I have three maps and flags contrasted together and organized in a specific order. On the far left side, there is a map/ flag of Iraq, and the mosque of Samarra, which is an Iraqi national symbol. I am originally Iraqi, but I have only been there once when I was three years old. Although so, most of my cultural and traditional background is Iraqi. My cultural background is also reflected in the dialect of Arabic I speak. Next to that right in the middle, I have a map/ flag of the United Arab Emirates. I was born in Dubai, and …show more content…
Under the picture of the piano, I have a picture of a phrase in Arabic which says Arabic. Arabic is a very important part of who I am because it is my mother language and I speak it a lot of the time. There is also a picture of tabuli, a traditional dish, that has now become very well known all around the world. I also wanted to be more in depth, so included a picture of parsley, and tomatoes, which are two of the main ingredients of it. Then I have a logo of Jeem Tv because it is a very important part of who I am. Right beside it I have an icon of a microscope which says that I like biology, and I have a picture of the book cover of the One which is my favorite book. Lastly I have a cartoon sketch of of a person drawing and thinking about disney’s mickey mouse. I put that sketch because I like both drawing and Disney.I wanted to also include some text around my artifact, so there is a variety of media involved. So I have a text in front of my maps, to say that the name of the country’s map, and I have another text that says music because music is very important to me. The last text that I have says that I speak arabic, because i included a photo of text in arabic, and I wanted to make it

What I found surprising and disturbing at the same time was a quote from Lieutenant Nun on chapter four, “I ran my sword point through Reyes’ friend-where, I cannot say-and down he went. And so with blood drawn on both side...” (14). I chose this quote because I would never have imagined she could kill someone in action and this is also where she starts to run away from her troubles from the law. Which she got charged with murder. But for Catalina, she has to set aside her feminism and be more masculine and to prove that she can do anything since she does not want to show any doubts about her real identity.…

A metaphor to thoroughly interpret my own cultural identity would be the coconut delicacy known as Haupia. Not only for its elegant perplexion, but for the soft clouded stature that belongs to this alien creature, which taste is only permitted to the fortunate few occupying the native islands of Hawaii. Another perplex root in the tree of my culture is Lei-making. The breathtaking row of an aligned set of flowers to form the Lei is one of the prime connections to the base of the hawaiian culture by contributing to the ancient craft itself. A more well-known phenomenon that had one of its origins among the islands of Hawaii and is still dwelled upon to this day is surfing.…

I have fond remembrances for the traditions of worship, celebration, and clean living. This is what connected me to my family is how our family connected. What I gained from family gatherings was the importance of family unity and strength for family. I made many deliberate choices when creating my visual; for example, using a multicolor background to represent the active brain patterns, along with the chaos and that can sometimes happen in the mind. In addition, the background also represents the many things that go into a person’s identity; it is not always neat and organized in a person’s brain. There are pictures that circle around a girl who is smiling with brown hair; the brown haired girl represents myself, and the pictures symbolize characteristics that form my identity. To further this, the arrows point towards me to express that those factors are a part of me, and make me who I am. Although there are a lot more adjectives that help to create my identity, I chose the most important ones because there are too many to list them all.…

As William Shakespeare says, “We know what we are, but not what we may be” (BrainyQuote). Often times in society, people allow material possessions inhibit their ability to become what they are capable of being; accepting who they are currently. Illegal and legal substances such as drugs cause people to lack free thinking and cause addictive behaviors that can lead people to not seek opportunities to succeed. The influence of others pushes people to take part in the use of things like drugs in order to appear normal in society. In Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, the government pushes the drug Soma as a replacement of religion and brainwashing tool inhibiting people’s ability to think freely and lack individuality, as a way to maintain supremacy and power over the people.…

People have always been interested in the idea of finding out about personal identity, what makes you the same person as you were when you were five and what will make you the same person when you are eighty. Derek Parfit summed up this idea by saying “Whatever happens between now and any future time, either I shall still exist, or I shall not. Any future experience will either be my experience, or it will not.” (Parfit- 186), which is what personal identity looks into. This essay will discuss whether personal identity is a matter of physical or psychological continuity, taking into account the famous ideas of philosophers such as John Locke, Derek Parfit and Bernard Williams.…

I believe that growing up a different environment and socializing with different people does makes up one’s identity, in other words, who I am. Everyone has their own life story, and I bet that their stories are more interesting than mine, the reason being my stories have more sadness rather than happiness. But with me, I respect every single event of this sadness and happiness, because they make up who I am. I was born in Vietnam, along with my brother and two sisters. Growing up surrounded by many challenges and witnessing many things in life taught me many lessons that I carry with me today.…
