Most people do not believe in organ donation for religious reasons. Most will not donate their organs because of the belief that they will need them in the afterlife. The afterlife is the belief that once a person dies, the soul repeats its steps. This requires all parts of the body to be present, undamaged, and whole because the soul reclaims its corporal shape. Some Christians view organ donation as mutilating and defacing the body. The Bible states, “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body” (English Standard Version, 1 Co. 6. 19-20). This verse is used to support the idea that organs should not be gathered from the body and makes organ donation a highly controversial subject within the Christian faith as well as in other religions. But according to Finger Lakes Donor Recovery Network, “All major religions in the world view organ donation as [an] act of charity or make it [the act of donating organs] clear that it is a decision to be left up to the individual or family.” Additionally, there are many verses throughout the Bible that can be used to offer support for organ donation.
