Around the fifth century BC’s couching methods were used to remove cataracts that had grown to become highly cloudy, opaque and heavy causing the various layers of the eye to become fragile. This allowed blunt objects to gain easier access into the region of the eye that contains the cataract, dislocating the lens and enabling for unfocused sight.
