How To Relate To College

The panel as about Dr. Shukralla, Dr. Provencher, Dr. Thurston and Mrs. Adams giving us their experiences of being the first one in their family to attend college. I got a lot more than I expected to out of this experience because I could relate to many of the experiences that were being talked about. A feeling that everyone talking had at one point in their college career was not fitting in because of their family backing and how they ended up at college. I can relate to this feeling because I was not pushed to go to college and I came to college because I worked hard in high school to get here on my own. Since being here I have become close with a few people and I have noticed they were all just pushed to go here for their parents. They all work for their grades to impress their parents whereas for me and many of the speakers worked for the grades for themselves. …show more content…
I thought this was a relatable and eye opening point hearing it from people who have lived through it and used it for the better instead of for the worse. One thing every speaker had in common was a high work ethic which brought them to the position they are in today. For some their work ethic was so high they couldn’t even hang out with friends because they felt like they were being lazy and for others their work ethic drove them to become the person they are today. After attending this event it was incredibly meaningful to see what other people have been through and how they let that affect them has changed their life. This event was much more relatable and inspiring that I expected going into it and I have learned some lifelong lessons from attending

At an early age, I didn’t understand the concept of an immigrant family and that our resources were very limited. It wasn’t until I got older, that I finally understood and recognized the struggle that my family went and still continues to go through. My realization began when I was about 11-years old and I noticed that my father not only worked for his own small gardening service, but that he also took my older brothers to work with him. I knew it was a time for serious measures because my brothers started helping my father when they were close to my age, and they continued throughout their whole school years. Everything was going normal in my family then, we rented a house that was in the name of my aunt, had enough money for the bills,…

As a child, going to college was a foreign to me. I didn’t see it as a priority, it was not important to me because I hardly even knew it existed. I was your average 7 year old boy running the streets of Albuquerque, New Mexico during the summer, coming home with a black eye and busted lip from fist fights, coming home to a garbage filled apartment, coming home to find my mother lying on the torn up leather couch out cold reeking of booze with a bottle in her hand, coming home late at night to find 4 year old sister with autism still awake at 11:00pm not eating, I came home every night being afraid whether or not we would have enough money to even pay the bills when they came around. Having no money made it even hard during the school year, I wore torn up, smelly, and stained clothes and was made fun of constantly.…

So far, I really like college. Sure, I wish I didn’t gave as many responsibilities sometimes, but compared to high school, it definitely takes the cake. Everything is so much more laid back and go at your own pace outside of classes. While at the same time in almost all my classes I feel as if my time is never being wasted, and if it starts to be usually the professor will let the class leave if they’re done already. That is just fantastic, I always hated siting in a class doing nothing while waiting for a class to end, because there was nothing to do.…
