In real life, a distinguishing physical attribute such as a scar or mark can reveal an aspect of the bearer’s history. A crooked nose recounts the time when a throw went astray in little league. A veteran with a missing limb lets his or her injury speak for itself about the brutality of war and the sacrifice soldiers make for their country. A blotch of old frostbite brings back memories of long winter adventures. Markings can tell stories without even using words. In literature, however, scars, marks, and deformities speak louder than they do in the reality because writers often use them as symbols. Unlike real-world wounds, writers can manipulate what a character’s injury expresses to the reader. English professor and author, Thomas Foster, discusses the importance of bodily markings as symbols in his book, How to Read Literature Like a Professor. When a piece of literature introduced …show more content…
Foster’s claims are reflected in several pieces of literature including
The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón, in which Julián Carax’s burns make an indirect statement about his character, The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, in which Hassan’s harelip ties the novel’s plot together, and Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup, in which the slaves’ scars make a political statement about the inhumanity of slavery.
In The Shadow of the Wind, Julián Carax sustains burns that emphasize his life and emotions. Throughout the novel, Julián’s life was full of sorrows. He was an illegitimate child who was despised by his mother’s husband, he was

George Orwell’s novel, 1984, and Thomas C. Foster’s novel, How To Read Literature Like A Professor, have several comparisons. Winston Smith, thirty-nine year old worker for the Ministry of Truth, is stuck in a totalitarian environment that he strongly disagrees with. However it is wise for him to keep his feelings to himself because “Big Brother is always watching.” 1984 relates widely to chapter thirteen, It’s All Political , of How To Read Literature Like A Professor. 1984 is a novel with a deeper political meaning behind it.…

The first chapter of the book How to Read Literature like a Professor, by Thomas C. Foster discusses the importance of recognizing the quest in every story. What comes to mind when reading the word quest would be a stereotypical medieval setting. This medieval setting would consist of five things, a quester, a place to go, a stated reason to go there, challenges and trials, and a deeper and more meaningful reason to go which is usually not clearly stated. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley meets all of the requirements of a “quest”, the quester being Victor Frankenstein. The place to go in the quest would be more of the pursuit of greater knowledge while the stated reason would be personal satisfaction gained by the protagonist in reaching the desired knowledge.…

Foundation Before Density In Scott McCloud’s graphic essay, “Show & Tell”, McCloud uses an appreciable combination of words and images interchangeably to convey clear and comprehensible thoughts, He establishes better, more understood, literature by depicting images directly alongside pieces of text. Evidently, pictures are an associative mechanism that enables newcomer and experienced readers to make visual connections to text they normally would not conclude to by only analyzing and interpreting words (McCloud). Moreover, aside from images allowing readers to make connections, illustrations are particularly crucial components in literary works because they can convey coherent messages all on their own. In all, visual depictions in literature…

In the article, “Why Literature Matters” by Dana Gioia, Gioia presents a claim that shows the decline of interest in the arts, specifically literature, in the newer generation of Americans. Within the piece, Gioia provides accurate statistics, a quote from a notable professional, and reports from trustworthy sources. Gioia makes an attempt to shift America’s attention to the downfall of participation in the arts. He seems to direct his argument mainly at the modern group of individuals. Starting off with introductory paragraph, Gioia begins to list positive changes in American society, such as college attendance ballooning and access to information skyrocketing enormously, but then quickly drops to one negative: “the interest young Americans showed in the arts – and especially literature – actually diminished.”…

Chapter 22: He’s Blind for a Reason, You Know Main Idea: Foster claims in this chapter that blindness is never just a fact—it always has symbolic significance in a story. He furthers his claim by saying that most texts feature metaphorical representations of blindness and sight, even if the story doesn’t contain literal blindness. Two important things are that blindness can mean much more than just the physical act of seeing, and that usually a characteristic such as blindness, is important when introduced early in a story. Literary Example: Slaughterhouse Five Analysis: True sight is an important concept that is difficult to define for Slaughterhouse-Five. As an optometrist in Ilium, Billy has the professional duty of correcting the vision of his patients.…

Thomas C. Foster, author of How to Read Literature Like a Professor, begins his book with the very basics, even exemplifying how children read. He also illustrates “universal” comprehension across literature, and how certain symbols such as “darkness” have a similar meaning in most works (Foster xiv). A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving utilizes one of these widely understood patterns when speaking of the important symbol of the mannequin. The main character, Johnny Wheelwright, often sees the dummy his mother uses for copying clothes in dim light. As a child, he says that “the dummy would startle me,” and that he “would think that the dummy was [his] mother.”…

Layers of Fiction Symbolism is represented by levels of pragmatic and figurative meaning. As an example, in “The Yellow Wallpaper,” Gilman incorporates the very wallpaper to represent this idea. The wallpaper displays more than just symbolism; it also shows the time period and theme of the story. These elements of fiction are also supported by the first person narration in helping the reader understand and analyze the text. This combination helps to show the relationships of the protagonist, overall setting, and theme of the story.…

Although language is the mode of representation chosen by authors and poets to convey their art, there are but a few of these pieces of art which actually use the “written medium” as an element to further the main plot let alone use it as the primary way in which the first person narrator communicates to the reader as well as with Earl. The reason for this high dependence on the written medium is both a choice on the part of Nolan and a compulsion of the plot. It is implemented in the story through the small note and tattoos which the first person narrator leaves for the present…

Two of the most prominent authors Edgar Allen Poe and Jorge Luis Borges uses similar literary devices such as, indirect characterization, symbolism and imagery differently and the same throughout their literary works. For example, in Borges mysterious short story “The Garden of Forking Paths” (1941) he uses imagery to capture and inform those confused in life on how to decide which path is right for them through the symbolism of the experiences of Captain Lidell Hart in 1916. That coincides with Poe’s amusing short story “The purloined letter” (1845) written to those in search of something to explain that (“beneath the nose of the whole world, by way of best preventing any portion of that world from perceiving it”) things are best hidden right in front of us because we tend to overlook, using the “Purloined letter” as a symbol. We see this from the eyes of a royal lady and her friend Dupin in “18---”that also gives us insight into who the characters are as people. Poe and Borges, both use the devices effectively to convey their overall themes.…

Literary devices are specific language techniques which writers use to create text that is clear, interesting, and memorable. Markus Zusak uses these techniques to engage the reader. A interesting quote that is imagery is “A bandaged hand fell out of his coat sleeve and cherries of blood were seeping through the wrapping” (Zusak 465). This quote belongs in the category of Anger and abandonment. These descriptive words help the reader understand that Michael Holtzapfel was in a tragic event and he came out of the war with a big injury on his arm.…

With even a passing reading of his poetry, it is quite evident that Michael Ondaatje has a strong fascination with markings and the meanings they entail. From poem to poem, the marks range in how they are presented: sometimes they are sensory and other times they are emotional. In The Time Around Scars, the markings are discussed as if they were physical wounds. Meanwhile, the markings of The Cinnamon Peeler come in the form of scents.…

Scarring is used as a symbol of the intangible and psychologically poignant experiences that characters have in The English Patient, as well as throughout Ondaatje's canon. A symbol is a literary device that is used to represent an abstract idea in a concrete form. This symbolism is evident throughout Ondaatje's body of work, where scars manifest loss in The English Patient, the impact of a strong connection in “The Cinnamon Peeler”, and finally memories hurt and pain in “The Time Around Scars”. The ubiquity of scarring vindicates it as a device that Ondaatje purposely uses, rather than a mere coincidence. The events that cause the physical scars to the literary characters give an impression that will remain for the rest of their lives, similar…
