How To Read Literature Course

This term I had the opportunity to learn about analyzing literature, the writing Process, poetry, drama, and conducting literary research. This course has allowed me to have a different perspective on literature. In the beginning of this course I was uneasy about analyzing literature because I felt I would not comprehend the material. Now, my viewpoint has altered I feel more confident in analyzing literature. Since, I have learned various strategies for reading a work of literature. As I read the literature I searched for something deeper within. For instance, learning about literary devices and how to analyze them has vastly helped me in this course. Currently when I read literature I focus on such things as the setting, characterization, narrator, dialogue, symbolism, and word choice. For instance, as I read Roberts Frost, Home Burial it confirmed my view on death, grief, and loss. Death is an event that has a lasting impact on the ones who love us. Many times the death of a young child seems to leave a tremendous amount of pain and sorrow. If the parents of this child are not able to obtain support from one another through this traumatic event, it can have a destructive impact on their own relationship. Robert Frost’s “Home Burial” is a gloomy poem that demonstrates the distinctive manner in which males and females grieve. Also the reader is able to observe the limits of communication amongst the couple. This lack of communication builds a wall which ultimately separates them from one another.
