I believe the strengths of my lesson were keeping the students on task and including all students in the lesson. I kept students on task by explaining my expectations and showing enthusiasm before the lesson. This made the students aware of their behaviors and became engaged because they sensed my enthusiasm. I grabbed their attention by doing a small version of Simon Says. For example, I said, “If you are ready to learn, touch the sky.” I did 3 of these at a time and reminded the students to sit crisscross applesauce. This grabbed their attention by stretching their bodies when they, “touched the sky,” and prepared them to learn. Throughout the lesson, if students were talking, when they were not supposed to, I gave a reminder. If the talking continued, I regrouped the students and gained their attention through another version of Simon Says, but with new actions. I also included all students by waiting 7 seconds before I called on a student. This is because there were several students who raised their hand for every questions, and I did give them their turn to share, but I also made sure those students who take a little more time to raise their hand, also had a turn to participate. Be specific.
The challenges I faced in my read aloud lesson were students talking during the extension activity. I did not have anything else for the students who finished very quickly, so I allowed them to talk to their neighbor if their neighbor was also finished. This distracted students who were still working; therefore, not all students completed the extension activity to the best of their ability. Another challenge I faced was keeping the lesson 20 minutes long. My lesson was about 25 minutes when cleanup was finished because students did take more time to complete the extension activity than I anticipated.

My read aloud did not followed my lesson plan, before I read the story to the students, I forgot to show the students all the pictures in the storybook as I planned. The high points from my read aloud were that the students were engaged by acting out as baby owls or owl mother, and answering the questions from the storybook. The weak points from my read aloud were reading the story too fast, and after I asked a question to the students, I should wait a little longer wait time for the students to think and response. To make the read aloud better for next time, I will need to slow down my speed and pause as needed. Also, after reading the story, I should ask the students some questions for them to connect their own experiences with the story,…

In Dr. Cook’s Materials for Teaching Reading, we learned effective ways to give a read aloud. In many of my language arts lessons, I had to read aloud a text to the student. Also, every day after lunch I would read a chapter from a Ready Freddy book to the students. We learned to introduce the book to the students and to mention the title, author, and illustrator. When I would do a read a loud in my language arts lesson I would always do this, the students were very interested to hear this about the book we were reading.…

Creating Engaging Lessons To create lessons that are engaging, educators can use “hooks” to grab the student’s attention and keep them highly engaged throughout the class period. “Hooks” need to be introduced at the beginning of the lesson so students will become sold on the material right away. If not, students will become bored and that’s when educators start having discipline and behavior problems. “Hooks” need to be strong and should explain “what students are about to learn, why what they are about to learn is important, and how the learning will take place (the day’s agenda)”…

Every history teacher has their own unique way of making history engaging. From a young age students have been taught history and after a few repeating lectures the topics become boring to most. For me American and World history were long boring subjects about the past until my junior and senior year with Mrs. Popkins. Mrs. Popkins taught American history to juniors and World history to seniors at Norwalk High School in Iowa. She came into the classroom everyday with an energetic, happy, and enthused vibe about history.…

My Instructional Conversation lesson went decently, although it could have been greatly improved by setting behavioral expectations. My students have never done an instructional conversation lesson and mentor teacher warned me that it would be difficult. She has been struggling to get them to talk to each other more often as well. As with most students, they have a tendency to talk and look to the teacher for approval or confirmation. I had them move so that they faced each other, hoping that would encourage discussion, but it did not accomplish much.…

Due to the prevalence of high language demands in this content area task, I emphasized many content specific words and phrases. Third grade students are expected to be “Asking questions and defining problems (3-PS2-3)” as well as “Analyzing and Interpreting Data Analyzing (3-ESS2-1) ;” in order to work toward these objectives English Learners must have access to the “vocabulary, function, syntax, discourse” (EdTPA Rubric 4). The vocabulary I strongly emphasize in this lesson includes “Question, observe/observation, hypothesis, predict/prediction, experiment, and results” I selected to emphasize this language because these terms are going to be used throughout their education and possibly in their future careers. Phrases such as “Why does ______?”…
