The tone is the words an author chooses that sets the feeling a reader has while reading the poem. When speaking, tone of voice suggests the reader's attitude. It suggests two different attitudes, one is concerning the people the reader is addressing, like an audience, and the other is concerning the thing the reader is talking about, like the subject.
My Papa’s Waltz pg. 569
In My Papa’s Waltz, the child is getting beaten up by his father, which is told in a way of a romantic and beautiful dance, the waltz. Theodore Roethke tries to make the experience beautiful by making it a waltz. Dancing is a symbolism in this poem because this dance is a symbol of the relationship the father and son have. The waltz was not easy for the son, so that could mean that the relationship with his father was not easy. The tone of this poem was a negative tone because Roethke used the words "beat" and "palm caked hard."

This poem means exactly what the title says, it is about a train. In his first line of To A Locomotive in Winter, Walt Whitman states why he created this poem. He created is because it is a recitative for a Locomotive in winter. Whitman describes the train and how beautiful it
