As said by the three-time Olympic champion, Gail Devers, “Sometimes we fall, sometimes we stumble, but we can’t stay down. We can’t allow life to beat us down. Everything happens for a reason, and it builds character in us, and it tells us what we are about and how strong we really are when we didn’t think we could be that strong.” In the non-fiction book Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, Louie Zamperini’s unrelenting strength in the face of unimaginable horrors emulates the words spoken by Devers. Despite being subjected to constant torture and starvation in a Japanese POW camp for two years, Louis remained resilient.…
GOALS My goal is to gain 3 pounds of lean mass by the end of next month. As my metabolism is so high, I have to increase my calorie intake drastically. I will try to train at least 3 days per week to maintain a good body composition.…
An example of how theory informed practice in my field placement as a case manager intern is when I encountered a patient that had be discharged to a nursing home facility. The client wanted to be discharged home, where he lives alone, rather than to a nursing home, where he will be safe from falling. I decided to use the family centered practice approach to help the patient feel more at ease and be provided with his daughter’s support. According to Lietz, family centered practice is a strength-based approach that focuses on the strengths within the family to provide them with a proper intervention that will uniquely work for them (2011). Also, as a form of respect, social workers should be aware of the client’s cultural differences when introducing…
Ever since I played T-ball, I have always been the skinniest kid on all my sports teams. Being unusually underweight really upset me. I tried everything from eating protein-packed foods to daily weightlifting, but nothing seemed to work. Even some of my friends called me the “Twig.”…
1.My goal is to improve my muscular strength so I will hit 10 homeruns over the fence this softball season. I will do this by doing anaerobic exercises and lifting weights, I will practice on my batting trainers, and by doing core stability training. 2.Last season with my first travel softball team I hit 3 homeruns over the fence (March 15th - August 21st). On the school softball team I hit 5 homeruns over the fence (Late March - Early May) because it was an easier team with easier pitchers and the people in the field didn’t have much practice. But on my travel team everything is more advanced so I need to become stronger to reach my goal.…
During the four week fitness log I was able to achieve most of my goals. The first goal I achieved was being able to lift 115 lbs on the leg extension. I accomplished this goal within the first two weeks. By the end of week three, I slowly made my way to 10 reps of 115 lbs constantly. I believe that doing squats, wall-sit, and other leg workouts increased my ability to achieve the goal.…
Being successful is an important part of the college experience. College classes require more study time outside of class. If a class is a 3 credit hour class, then you need to study for 6 hours outside of class for that content. Throughout high school, classes weren’t as restrictive of time so students didn’t have the concentration that is needed for success. This is why they don’t do as well and fear failure.…
I have always been kind of weak and lanky which I am trying to fix. Not only have I been lifting during class but I have been lifting at the YMCA as well. While all of that training seems like overkill I have seen my strength scores go up and my body is in good shape. Lastly, I make sure to stretch a lot which will be mentioned in the following…
Fitness and Goal Setting Knowledge Fitness and goal setting have been the main topic of conversation in this class. Whether we need to work on legs or arms today, or what we are going to do in the future. I learned that it is better to do quantity over quality when it comes to fitness workouts, and that it is always important to stretch and warm up your muscles before a workout to ensure you do not strain any muscles. For goal setting, I learned that if you pick a specific goal that you wish to achieve, like say to reach +10 in the fitness flexibility test, you can keep working towards that goal step by step, or in this case number by number, to reach your goals efficiently. When reaching towards a goal, you cannot just make it in one try…
I took the time to think about where I wanted to be physically, as well as what had worked and what hadn’t worked for me during the fall. I knew I wanted to be like the strong and muscular girls that could lift their body weight. I had grown to love lifting during track, even more so than running and based of what information out there on strength training, I decided to start incorporating weight training into my workouts. I was able to stay on track for the whole semester and by the time summer rolled around I felt much better about how I looked and felt compared to the previous…
You are being demoted to JV. It’s something a athlete never wants to hear. To reach the point where you are on the varsity team, and then to feel as if all of that hard work was taken away from you. It’s debilitating. I had to hear these words the spring of my sophomore year, after playing the first quarter of the season on the varsity team.…
To build muscle, one must understand the components required to maximize the body 's muscle building process. Aside from sheer hard work and dedication, there are four main components. Nutrition, hydration, training, and protein synthesis which is the biological process does the muscle building. Each component is an absolute requirement for this topic, and will be analyzed independently, to show how collectively, they work together to create optimal conditions for muscle growth.…
Goal setting is an important part of succeeding in college. Which is why I choose to set academic goals for myself all year around. My three main academic goals are to obtain a 3.8 GPA, have better time management skills, and to graduate within 4 years. To elaborate, I currently have a 3.4 GPA. Over summer, I plan to work hard and pass all of my summer classes.…
Everybody these days wants to get fit, but most don’t know the right way to go about doing it. Sure everyone gets they have to eat right and work out, but that’s just the very beginning. When it comes to fitness you have to remember, you only get out what you put in.…
In addition to that, I will try new food products that include these two micronutrients. My third goal is to go to the gym more regularly throughout the week. At the moment, I am only going about once per week, and by changing that to two or three times per week, I can make a healthy change. By going to the gym more, I will also have the chance to try the different types of exercises, such as anaerobic, aerobic, and strength lifting. My fourth goal is to add more variety to my diet, which will include trying new vegetables and protein products.…
