Keep or Delete Imagine that somebody broke into your home. The number one thing you’ll look for is a knife, but the knife will get you killed if the burglar has a high class type of weaponry, most likely a gun. Now imagine the same scenario, but this time you had a gun. Luckily you shout to the burglar that you have a gun and you fire a blank. This time you scare away the burglar and nothing like that ever happens. Without guns we’ll be left highly vulnerable to our enemies. It doesn’t take a scientist to know that there are wars going on. We have soldiers that are on land and they use guns to protect themselves so without guns we’ll be losing lots more men than we are now. According to Jacob Davidson of The Time (2015), “...we would not be a safe society, eliminating assault weapons. People could substitute the non-assault weapons that are exactly the same.” He also states that, “Assault weapons are not more powerful, they don’t shoot more bullets, and they do not shoot faster.” Most people would agree that taking away guns would cause more death on the battlefield than on the streets. It would also cause more chaos and grief with families and the U.S.

Society has been split into two over whether or not guns should be banned, but there needs to be a solution where both parties can be happy. Anti-gun advocates present reasoning why guns should be banned. McMahan’s main two arguments of why guns should be banned: one, guns in the community creates a more dangerous environment; and two, the police have less of a power to protect citizens when society has guns (Shafer-Landau, The Ethical Life (EL) 390). McMahan explains that communities are not going to be free of crimes with more people carrying around guns, because criminals will be more prepared, efficient, and quicker to grab and shoot their target (Shafer-Landau, EL 392-392). People with guns will be safer than people without guns, because they do not have a gun to protect themselves.…

Going back to the idea that the government could take away all the firearms from civilians, we have to face the fact that even that would not protect anyone. Instead, it would put many people in danger. The law to take away guns would not affect criminals, because criminals do not follow the law. Without guns for protection, the law-abiding citizens would be helpless to defend themselves against the criminals who would now be the only citizens with guns. The law that was meant to protect would actually lead to the victimization and possible death of law-abiding citizens.…
