How To Play Softball Essay

Softball has always been a favorite past time of mine. The heat from the summer days, the smell and taste of Gatorade and sunflower seeds always bring me to the memory of playing softball. Merriam Webster Dictionary defines softball as a sport that is similar to baseball but that is played on a smaller field and with a ball that is pitched underhand and that is larger and softer than a baseball When playing softball, you have to have a glove for catching, a bat for batting, cleats for playing in the field and a uniform to match your team. Some other necessary gear you would need is softball pants, team shirt, high top socks, and a bat bag to hold all of your gear. Although different positions call for different items. There is a total of nine positions out on the field. The positions include; catcher, pitcher, first base, second base, short stop, third base, left field, center field and right field. There is also an umpire that stands behind the catcher, who people call Blue, that keeps count of outs. Another part of the umpire’s job is to call strikes, foul balls, runs and balls against the batter. Up at bat, a player gets three balls and two strikes. Strikes are pitches that the umpire consider a “perfect” ball to hit. It’s right down the middle and in the strike zone. A ball is a pitch that is out of the strike zone so it would be too high up, on either sides or too low. If the batter gets four balls then he/she gets to walk to first base. Basically giving the opposite team a free bag/base.
I had always played first and third base for years. Until, I was a sophomore in high school, the coach needed a pitcher. I said I would and with my first pitch I had awed the coach.
