How To Play Guitar Essay

Improved Essays
I is for instruments. Recently, I have done some great things with the instruments I currently play. Violin, piano, bass, and guitar are the instruments that I play. The one that I will be talking about most is bass because I spend the most time on it, and it is currently my favorite to play. This spring, I bought a bass guitar from a guy who lived in Wichita. When I did this, it opened up a lot of things in my bass playing. I went from only having a standup bass at school to having a guitar at home. That is when I started learning many new things. One of the techniques I started to learn on the bass was called slapping. This is when you use your thumb to strike one of the strings and one of your other fingers to pull up on another. When I tried, it was not a successful process. I hardly knew how to do the technique, what fingerings to use, or even how the song really went. I was in a real dilemma for learning this song. I went to YouTube to see if there were any videos showing me how to slap properly, and how the song went. What I found was a video on slapping taught by Flea, the exact guy who is the bass player from the Red Hot Chili Peppers! I had learned how to slap, but now I needed to know how to play the song. The opening riff was the only thing I could remember. I did some more searching on YouTube. After finding a lot of bad video tutorials on Higher Ground, I was kind of getting frustrated because I couldn't learn this awesome song. After days of searching, I came across this video that was the perfect one. It showed me the whole entire song, and how to play each section. I watched the video and started to learn more about the song, how to play the chorus, and those kinds of things. The main part of the song however, is built around the opening riff. You'll know what I mean when you listen to it. After days of practicing all of the sections, I could finally piece together the whole song from start to finish. There were plenty of mistakes when I recorded it, but at least I knew the

Even though it was difficult to understand the words of the vocalist, it was still noticeable that the words went along the rhythm of the song and the melody. After the lyrical section of the song, the electric guitar had a solo which had a riff at a medium tempo; the solo seemed to have only been a written solo, since the musician appeared to be reading it from the music sheet. After the guitarist solo, there was a horn solo which involved tonality of high pitch notes. The whole band then played a consonant harmony that had the same syncopation as the introduction. Then the vocalist sang, while the guy in the keyboards played a chord.…

As the school year progresses, Thomas Jefferson's extra curricular programs continue to display their hard work for the students enjoyment. During the boys’ basketball game on January 4th, against Westminster High School, TJ’s drumline did just that, bringing the audience musical enjoyment in an unconventional way: by using buckets. After months of continuous practice, the drumline, led by band teacher Robin Johnson, was ready to perform a few songs as a halftime show. In preparation for events like this, “Students work on rudiments (rhythmic patterns), interpreting written music, as well as improvising and arranging their own music,” explained Johnson.…

Although the band that played on this recording was Count Basie’s Kansas City Seven, many of its members would also be a part of the Count Basie Orchestra. The song begins with Basie playing a few measures of piano as a strong walking bass accompanies him. Jo Jones’s drumming is barely audible because he steps out of the way for the band to play over him. Soon the main riff of the song comes in, and Count Basie interjects perfectly timed notes in between repetitions of the riff. These notes are examples of Basie’s use of musical space to create groove.…

Melody- There's this basic riff repetition being played. As simple as it may be, there is melodic contour which takes shape when the direction changes. This song uses disjunct motion, the intervals change quite a bit. A lot of the singing seems to be staccato, adding to the long pauses. There's also legato that's connecting the song.…

With the beat set by the drums and the piano comping during the beginning of the solo, expert plucking and intense bow play show the bass’s wide-ranging capabilities. I love the energy, focus, and enthusiasm the bassist shows by contorting his face. In order to close the song, the clarinet, trombone, and trumpet come in during the last thirty seconds. This song was truly enjoyable, both from a visual and sound perspective. Because of the over eight minutes of pure bass play, I felt that the musician was really able to explore the instrument.…

“Slapstick” is classed as a style of humor, which involves exaggerated physical activity that takes human common sense to a further level of their mind. The phrase “slapstick" belongs to the Italian language word batacchio. In England it is known as a club-like object combined of two wooden slats used in commedia dell'arte. If the battacchio is struck it makes smacking noise loudly and with such little force it transfers from the object through to the person acting like they have been struck.…

For this assignment I chose to watch the musical movie Rock of Ages. This movie is high energy and has fun and frisky choreography. With professional dancer Julianne Hough as our leading lady in the film it is tough not to get caught up in how the movement tells the story. After watching it I did realize there were several moments where they stopped dancing and that seemed to work for the story as well. From the start we get the urge to move with the opening song Paradise City.…

Some of the guitar parts in “The Thrill is Gone” sound similar to the guitar parts used throughout “Style Wars”. B.B. King’s starts off “The Thrill is Gone” with slower guitar playing where you are essentially able to hear each chord that he plays one at a time. This guitar style continues consistently until King begins to sing and the guitar sounds begin to mellow out and become more subdued over time. This guitar style is mimicked throughout “Style Wars”, however it is altered slightly. The same two chords are repeated over and over again, followed by a horn sound that has a slightly lower pitch.…
