How To Make Boucciane From Toluene

Improved Essays
German company BUCHLER manufactures 25-30% of quinine globally. Their manufacturing process is shown in Figure _.

After obtaining the cinchona bark, it is finely ground then mixed with quicklime and dilute sodium hydroxide. It is then treated with toluene in order to extract the cinchona alkaloids, which include quinine, quinidine, cinchonine and cinchonidine. Fats and resins are also extracted.

This is filtered and the residue is treated with steam to boil off and recover majority of the toluene from the bark. In order to get rid of the remaining toluene, the basic cinchona alkaloids are mixed with dilute sulfuric acid, causing them to form salts

The percent yield of isoborneol (part two) was determined to be 36.7% with the limiting reagent being camphor. If this reaction was repeated, more care would have been taken when subliming the product by controlling the temperature to make sure only camphor and isoborneol got sublimed. However, based on the IR spectra’s obtained camphor and isoborneol, the reaction did successfully oxidize borneol to camphor showing the formation of the key carbonyl group, and the reaction to reduce camphor to isoborneol did somewhat go to completion with the key hydroxyl group but it did show a carbonyl group present, which is not present in the true isoborneol IR spectrum. The 1H NMR also showed good experimental evidence of isoborneol being preferred (major product) over…

The purpose of the experiment was to form ketones by electrophilic aromatic substitution through a Friedel-Crafts acylation reaction of an aromatic compound. In the synthesized Friedel-Craft acylation reaction mechanism, the double bond on the nucleophile anisole (methoxybenzene) attacks the acetyl electrophile. The acetyl compound is then bound to the anisole in the para position, which created the product p-methoxyacetophenone. Since anisole is an activator (electron donor), the acetyl could have bound to either the ortho or para position (or in the meta position, but it not as likely).…

Even though Toluene can evaporate quickly “When toluene is spilled on the ground or improperly disposed, it can seep into soil and contaminate nearby wells and streams. Toluene can remain unchanged for a long time in soil or water that is not in contact with air.” ("Document Display (PURL) | NSCEP | US EPA") This compound is found naturally in crude oil and used highly in oil refinement. By touching contaminated soil, an individual can be exposed to toluene; even bathing in contaminated water, or may be just touching the chemical itself.…

    1. Why was a steam distillation performed rather than a simple distillation performed in the isolation of citral from lemon grass oil? Simple distillation is used to isolate a pure non-volatile liquid from another non-volatile substance. Steam distillation is used to separate liquid and solid that are somewhat volatile and immiscible in water.…

In particular, there was a significant amount of drying agent added which may have resulted in the loss of some product. As well, some product was lost in the removal of the product from the drying agent and during the distillation because of incomplete transfer. In addition, some was also likely lost through draining along with the aqueous phase during the washes and extractions. Improving the efficiency of these could increase the yield of the product by causing less…

Healing and Beauty Benefits of Cocoa Butter Cocoa butter is the natural fat extracted from cocoa beans. The process involves fine-grinding the cacao nibs (the seeds inside the cacao pods) which causes friction and melts into liquid known as the chocolate liquor. The more grinding, the smoother the chocolate liquor becomes. Cocoa oil is extracted by pressing and straining the liquor. What remains after pressing and straining is the solid mass of chocolate called the cocoa presscake which is broken down in small pieces and pulverized to powder form.…

Benzocaine was synthesized from p-toluidine in a four step synthesis. Each intermediate product, including N-acetyl-p-toluidine, p-acetamidobenzoic acid, and p-aminobenzoic acid, was checked for yield, presence, and purity through weighing, taking IR and NMR spectrums, and determining the melting point. Thin Layer Chromatography was used to ensure the completion of the final reaction from p-aminobenzoic acid to benzocaine. The yield of the first step from p-toluidine to N-acetyl-p-toluidine was 91.9%. The yield of the second step from N-acetyl-p-toluidine to p-acetamidobenzoic acid was 49.85% The yield of the third step from p-acetamidobenzoic acid to p-aminobenzoic acid was 32.49%, which was not enough to continue so some product was borrowed…

Herbal drugs have been used since the olden days. By the term “herbal” itself, it is from the plant origin and believed to be medicines for the treatment of a range of diseases. As a matter of fact, medicinal plants have played a major role in the well-being of the world population. However, there is a decline in the widespread application of phytotherapy, observed at the end of the first part of twentieth century. Plants still make an important contribution to healthcare in spite of the great advances in modern medicine in recent decades.…
