How To Interview A Social Worker

During the process of the final project, I had a difficult time deciding on who to interview. I didn’t want to interview someone who had a different race from me but I also wanted someone who had more responsibilities then myself.I have been around many different races and witnessed the judgments they receive but never went further into the struggles children add onto the responsibilities of an individual. Through the process of me figuring out who I felt would be best for this project, I decided on a mutual friend who's a single father with two children. We have heard of many struggles women encounter with being a single mother but we don’t tend to hear many men speaking about their difficulties with being single fathers. Therefore, I felt that would be a great opportunity to include a single man who’s a father of two, a Muslim, and Middle Eastern living in America. I will call this gentlemen Jack for the sake of confidentially. Jack’s culture and ethnicity entail Afghan but he considers himself Afghan American. Although he has no disability he did talk about an injury he had which included major operations at a young age back home. While having to overcome the illnesses, the lack of medical care resulted in having a near death experiences at an early age. Although not every program will be the right one, finding the right program can be beneficial for a family as it can be a lifelong resource. Summary The article, “The New F-Word: Father”, focuses on the importance of fathers to their children’s well being. As Kathleen Parker states, “The Pew Research Center has recently found that four in every 10 American households with children under the age of 18 include a mother who is either the primary breadwinner or the sole earner”. She also brings about the argument that we as a society continue to impose low expectations and a negative message on the male gender.…

Single-parent families are not only common but also far more socially acceptable than they were in the past. Scholars studying low-income or working-class communities have found out that the women in these communities no longer think it is important or even realistic to depend on the men in their lives. They have seen or experienced too much infidelity, divorce, substance abuse and other bad behavior to fully rely on their partners. Critics argue that we should accept the new reality and support single parents by providing more health care, childcare cash assistance and…

Edin and Kefalas Trump Horn Single parent families are becoming more and more common across the nation. Author Wade F. Horn captures the heart of the matter with alarming statistics in his article “Promoting Marriage as a Means for Promoting Fatherhood,” while Kathryn Edin and Maria Kefalas look at the issue first hand by interviewing various single mothers in their article “Unmarried with Children.” Although Horn, as well as Edin and Kefalas effectively convince readers of their views by using logos, pathos, and ethos, Edin and Kefalas create an argument that is more successful. Both authors use logos, or logic, as a means of providing evidence to support their claims, but Edin and Kefalas give more compelling evidence. For example, Edin and…

Life-History Interview Social workers use a collection of tools to assist in conducting a meaningful social assessment of elders by providing guided interviews with older adults. When planning for an interview a social worker would understand the time spent together, the reflection of their lives from a sociohistorical context, and social justice experiences by the elder over their lifetime. One of the positive aspects of reviewing and elder’s life come from weaving together the individual’s life. Social workers help them understand their lives in a more positive manner together, solve struggles, and make older adulthood more meaningful (Garthwait, 2007, p. 19).…

Fatherlessness in America Today’s society is crawling with vast amounts of different issues and problems. One of the major issues that many people face is the lack of a father figure in the household and in life. Author Louis de Bernieres once said, “In reality the world is as full of bad mothers as it is of bad fathers, and it is not the motherless children who become delinquent but the fatherless ones” and I believe that is one hundred percent true. About one in three babies born in the United States are born to a single mother each year.…

While many black parents may want to adopt children, their background from generations of discrimination has unfortunately made them unable to leave poor conditions and unsafe neighborhoods. Adoption agencies may not consider applications just based on the area the applicants live in. Another common argument is highlighted in an interview of black children who adopted by white parents, conducted by the Good Morning America news anchor, Ron Claiborne. The…

Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at 3:24PM, the viewing of the documentary entitled, “What about Fathers? A Child welfare Documentary: was very informative and motivating for those that are taking upon the role as a father or plan on being in the role as a father, in the future. This video was found very interesting and informative because it entails in details the importance of a father in their child’s life. In our present day American society, there are numerous stereotypes that exist pertaining to all different types of ethnicities and genders; however, no other race or gender faces more negative stereotypes than those of the African American man due to their high criminal accusation, conviction and imprisonment rates. Perhaps one of the biggest stereotypes that African American men must face is that they are not positive role models for their children and are uninvolved when it comes to their child’s education. An article that can be found in the Spectrum: A Journal on Black Men, titled "The Good Father: African American Fathers Who Positively Influence the Educational Outcomes of Their Children," by Theodore Ransaw, delves into the lives of…
