UBUNTU OR BOTHO
Ubuntu is a self-realization approach, that is expressed through relations with others or through communal means. It tends to carry with it a utopian connotation and is normally the basis in which those of African identity (not limited to black Africans) formulate their moral compass from and thus shaping the way they live their lives. This way of life by the African people is explicit in the following dictums: ‘A person is a person through other persons’ or ‘ I am because we are.’ One must note that the term Ubuntu and the dictums associated with it cannot be accurately translated or defined into English, as the weight and seriousness if the meaning can sometimes be lost in translation. For those with an egocentric approach, Ubuntu tends to be misunderstood (and thus neglected, or dismissed) as a concept of dependence that is obstruent to one’s individuality. As many seem to believe that the ‘self’ is destroyed due to the emphasis of community and the belief that in order for one to become a ‘complete person’ or ‘real self’ Ubuntu must be realized fully.

Like Paul's description of being within Jesus Christ, Ubuntu allows for the blurring of human characteristic categories. In Ubuntu, like in Christ, there is no Greek, no Jew, no female, no male. Color, status and gender is not seen but rather one's humanness. By reflecting and meditating on one's compassion, I too reflect on my compassion, by reflecting on one's generosity, I too will strive for generosity. Only by looking into the face of the other, do we find our own identity and through us, the other sees a resemblance to themselves. In other words, by an acknowledging one's humanness, can you acknowledge yours. One is not human without other
