In her “On How to Improve Schools” passage she talks about what good education is and how reading and math is not enough.”We want to prepare them for a useful life.” she writes in her second paragraph. Ravitch means multiple different things when she talks about “useful life”, like, how Americans should want students to face life’s joys, be courageous, have humor, know what justice and fairness are, be compassionate and also be responsible citizens. Imagine a student having a huge game and he feels so under pressure, everyone is counting on him or her. They are so focused on the game that they forget to do their homework then arrive the next day at school just to realize it 's time to turn it in, so the teacher gives them a bad grade. This is a serious problem because students should know that is what they signed up for, balancing a sport and his or hers academics. There are some cases where a parent will make their child do the sport, but if they can not do any of their homework they do not deserve to be in that sport. There are some coaches that will not let you participate in the sport because of a bad grade, but some coaches do not care. They do not care because they want the “all star” or more people on their team. A coach instead needs to be blunt with the “all star” or people he wants on his team even though they are not making decent grades. That will encourage the students to do better in academics and also work for something they want, is a great lesson to teach to students. The educational system really needs to step up its game and invest in more time to make sure the coaches are doing their job correctly.
