A little less than than a decade ago Beijing held the Olympic games. This large event that was commonly known as Beijing 2008, took place from 8 to 24 of August. Beijing was elected to be the host city in 2001, defeating bids from Toronto, Paris, Istanbul, and Osaka. After the first round of voting it was crystal clear that Beijing would be the host of the 2008 Olympics; leaving the other potential hosts far behind, Beijing had a significant lead. Being the most watched Olympic games in history, the games attracted 4.7 billion viewers worldwide. During the crucial competition 37 world records were set along with 125 Olympic records. When Beijing was voted to hold the 2008 Olympics, it built many structures to hold events in and also to train in. …show more content…
They produced approximately 2,200 hours of coverage. The ultimate centrepiece of the 2008 Olympics was the Beijing National Stadium, nicknamed "The Bird's Nest" because of its nest-like skeletal structure. Along with many other buildings for the Olympics, Beijing built 59 training centers. China won 51 gold medals and a total of 100 medals.
