A Lizard: A Short Story

How to grow a Lizard I was 5-years-old during the summer of 1996, and although young, I felt like I was capable of accomplishing anything. The first day that I was officially out of school, I woke up and the thought of going outside was simply exhilarating. “Today’s the day I’m going to prove to my brothers that I’m just as sneaky and fast as they are”, I said to myself. Each year, my brother’s always go outside and catch lizard’s, frogs, snakes, etc. all throughout the summer, but this year it’s my turn. I’ve been scoping out the best “lizard” places for weeks now, and I’m finally ready for some action. Little did I know, this day would be remembered and told throughout my family for years to come.

I climbed on the sink and retrieved the Neosporin and band aids from the medicine cabinet. I wasn’t sure how this works, but I assumed if I didn’t take care of it, that the lizard might be in pain when it grows back. After I played doctor, I went to my room and carefully placed the tail in a jar and put it in the top drawer of my dresser. I was unaware of how long it’d take to grow, but I figured by morning it would be as good as new. Later that day, my mom stumbled upon the jar while putting away my clothes. She didn’t seem angry when she asked me about it, but she acted disgusted by it and was trying to throw it in the trash. This was not the reaction I was expecting, I mean, why would my mom throw a lizard in the trash?! I pleaded with her “mom, I’m sorry that I hurt it, but I put medicine and a band aid on it until the lizard grows, please don’t take him away from me”! After staring at me blankly for a few seconds, the realization must have sat in, because she immediately changed the way she was talking to me. We had a serious talk about how fragile lizards are and how I needed to be more careful next time. Even though she was probably dying with laughter on the inside, she kept a straight face throughout the entire

A couple from Nobby's Creek had placed the golf balls in their chicken coop to encourage their hens to become broody. Instead of broody chickens, they found an 80cm long python with four conspicuous lumps and no golf balls. Figuring that the silly-looking snake must have eaten them, the kind couple took the python to the vet, who sent it to the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary where veterinarians operated to remove the four balls from its intestines. The veterinarian in charge of the operation, Dr Michael Pyne, said that the snake is now recovering well and would not have survived without surgery as the balls were stuck and could not be passed. Snakes such as pythons are able to dislocate their jaw in order to swallow food (and golf balls) which are larger than their head.…

In the story “The lizard Who had the Habit of Dining on His Wives” by Eduardo Galeano, women's empowerment is manifested by the figurative destruction of a predator creature by a girl wearing glasses who is educated, strong and independent. Her empowerment was in large part due to her feminist attributes which, while contrary to the attributes of the other women he had been with, the lizard man found very alluring. On the other hand, in “The Mother” by Natalia Ginzburg, the protagonist was ostracized for being ahead of her time and ultimately paid for her forward thinking with her life. These two stories are related in several ways but also have very distinct endings. One of the prevailing themes that transcends both stories is feminism in a male dominated society.…

I was smiling the whole time as the skin around my neck was being ripped off. Well I wasn’t actually smiling and as brutal as I made it sound, it wasn’t as horrific an event now that I look back on it. The incident occurred while I was on Spring Break during my freshman year in high school. My family and I were vacationing in Gatlinburg, Tennessee;which if I might add we’ve been there about eight times since I was seven years old. I remember clearly that day down to the exact temperature.…
