Words possess power whether in thought or verbalized. The penning of the childhood phrase, “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me,” lay wide a chasm of untruth. Words hurt. They also heal. And, these truths include those words and phrases we consume from the mouths of others and those we speak to ourselves.

From this fountain flows self-doubt (among other things). And, it leaves us wondering if self-doubt must remain a plague of human existence. Reality admits that everyone of us experiences self-doubt at varying points in our lives.

And, research confirms the negative effects self-doubt plagues us with both personally and professionally. A state of doubt prevents us from taking on new

Take time to remember your successes and accomplishments. Confidence gained from experience encourages us to step into new challenges, even if hesitation remains.

PREPARATION
Study the topic. Rehearse the speech. Practice the moves. Gather advice. Whatever it takes, build your confidence through mental and physical skill building. Knowledge dispels self-doubt.

New tasks especially challenge our impressions of self. But,learning and expertise require time. Failure often launches new, better ideas. And, both of these facts are true for all people. Granting yourself grace with the learning process and allowing for failure eases self-doubt.

FOCUS
Distractibility prevents success. Keeping eyes on the goal, the prize, the end game increases effectiveness in getting there, But, the truth remains that we allow many things to draw our focus from the prize and boost self-doubt.

The words of others and those of the diatribe in our mind need to be silenced with focus. While there needs to be time to address the truth and untruth of these distractions, the moment of stepping into the arena is not it. Focus on the present and do your best with
