How To Explain What I Learned After High School Graduation Essay

Last spring, Kirkwood Community College’s Chamber Winds Ensemble performed at the Adult Education Graduation. This graduation is for students who received their General Education Diploma. We prepared music for about a month and then we performed it at the ceremony. The ceremony was quite small and there were few graduates however, I felt our impact on the graduates and the graduate’s impact on me was immense. These people had to overcome obstacles that the majority of people don’t have to face. These people, either by choice or by circumstances that were out of their control, were not able to proceed down the aisle with “Pomp and Circumstance” playing in the background the first time around. They were unable to walk across the stage to accept their high school diploma with …show more content…
This ceremony seemed so minute compared to the experience I had the previous day. Even though the whole arena was filled and there were hundreds of graduates, the room felt empty. This diploma seemed to mean less to these graduates.
I’m grateful that I was able to participate in the GED graduate’s special day. I’m grateful that I got to play “Pomp and Circumstance” for them. I’m grateful that I got to be a part of their celebration of overcoming of obstacles that I have never had to face. I’m grateful that they were able to teach me something I could never learn in a classroom.
To be honest, my role in this endeavor was quite small. I simply had to prepare music and then perform it. The graduates did all of the hard work. I’d like to think that I had an impact on these graduates, because they definitely impacted me. I hope that hearing “Pomp and Circumstance” as they entered the arena made them feel proud of their accomplishments and gave them a strong push forward as they enter a new chapter of their life. I may have impacted only a small quantity of people on this day however, I think the quality of the impact is

Academic accomplishment is an illusion of superiority. The only people that truly achieve happiness and accomplishment are the ones who go beyond labels, physical characteristics, jobs and degrees, and see themselves as well as the people around them as humans. The person in charge of a commencement speech must be able to reach the students from an equal and humble approach rather than a judgmental or superior one, because the students are full of dreams, hopes and aspiration. The attitude of the speakers towards their audience plays a critical factor in whether they could inspire the students who listened to them or not. Consequently, it’s easy to determine that David McCullough's approach to the students comes from a know-it-all basis, contrasting…

The performance I attended to fulfill the requirements for this paper was “Celebration at the Station,” an annual concert put on by the Kansas City Symphony honoring veterans and celebrating America. The concert was held outside Union Station, on the grounds of the National World War I Museum, in downtown Kansas City on May 24th, 2015 at 8pm. The concert was concluded by a magnificent fireworks display above the World War I Museum tower. Michael Stern is the conductor of the Kansas City Symphony and he was joined by guest musicians, The Elders. John Amos, a former National Football League player and famous “Roots” actor, narrated the evening which added to the concert put on by the symphony.…

Stage fright has always been a part of my life, but in my junior year of high school, I decided to face my fear and join the Speech and Debate team. My instructor called us together within the first two weeks of school and informed us that our first competition was in three weeks. There are many tournaments within one Speech and Debate competition, which helps to expand the topics of each speech and performance. Most topics are self chosen, rather than assigned, and the competitors have the option of competing as a duo of two partners. Since it was my first time ever competing on a Speech and Debate team, I decided to enter the competition with my friend and compete in the duo section.…

A magnificent rounded auditorium shining with golden adornments, a ceiling that made me crane my neck to fully appreciate its vastness, and over 2,500 people in five tiers of seating truly took my breath away. Even so, the setting of Carnegie Hall couldn’t compare to the astonishment I felt when I sang there. In 2014, my concert choir was selected to be part of a 200 voice choir in a PERFORMING a Christmas concert at Carnegie Hall. We received our composition around a month before the December concert, and honestly, it didn’t seem to be anything special. We were part of a background choir after all.…

While there have not been very many memorable rites of passage moments in my life, the one that does stick out is the completion of high school. Prior to the last semester of my senior year, I moved to Austin, Texas to live with my aunt. With it being too late to enroll at one of the local high schools, I complete the last of my credits online. I knew I wouldn't get to walk across a stage and collect my diploma like all of my friends back home, nor would I get to celebrate with them, which, at the time, was discouraging. However, the week that followed the completion of my online classes, my aunt set up a mock graduation for me with a tiny stage and fake diploma ready.…

Be it the birth of Christ or the victory of the revolution against the Greek-Syrian, many families come together to share during the holiday seasons. Even though traditions and beliefs are different in every household, an ultimate goal is reached; unity. This among other valuable lessons, I learned working by the side of Lupita and a number of genuine souls. At the beginning of my eight grade year Mrs. Duarte, Lupita’s mom, made an announcement during youth group.…
