Adacia Chambers, a 25-year-old woman who drove her grey Hyundai Electra into a crowd at the Oklahoma State University’s homecoming parade on October 24, 2015, killed four people as well as injured forty-six and according to court documents, she was not found to be intoxicated at the time of the incident. As reported by NBC News, “an application for psychology and crash reconstruction experts filed by Chambers' lawyer in Payne County Court revealed that Chambers' blood alcohol level was just .01 when her blood was drawn immediately after the crash” (NBC, 2015). Although she was not driving under the influence, Tony Coleman, Chambers attorney, believes she is suffering from a mental illness. In an ABC News article, Tony Coleman stated, “I have…
CHOOSE A FOCUS IN MEDICAL SOCIOLOGY THAT YOU FIND INTERESTING. The focus in medical sociology that I have found most interesting is that of mental illness. Mental illness is a subject that is still not fully understood and definitely not yet widely accepted by the public. Mental illness is one of the only non-preventable illnesses that carry such a negative stigma.…

Schizophrenia and OCD: The Troubled Mind of Margery Kempe The mind can be a very fragile thing. Too much stress, too much trauma, and a person can be left as a mere shell of their former selves. Once a person’s psyche is shattered there is no guarantee that they will pull themselves back together again or whether the victim will come back the same. Mental disorders can be tricky, they do not always affect one person the same way that it might affect another.…

Art reflects life: as society and its institutions change, art remains as a record of historical thoughts and practices. The way in which society views and treats those suffering with mental illness varies depending on the contemporary theory for its cause and its place among society. As man progressed from the superstitious dogma on mental illness surrounding the Medieval period, theories and cures towards mental illness increased in their analytic methods, though it certainly took centuries to overcome the stigma surrounding it. Albrecht Dürer’s Melancholia I (Figure 1), William Hogarth’s A Rake’s Progress: The Madhouse (Figure 2), and Vincent van Gogh’s Self Portrait with Bandaged Ear and Pipe (Figure 3) reflect their period’s treatment…
Carla’s story has been one of the most inspirational stories that I have yet to read in Firewalkers. Throughout her story, there were several battles Carla had to overcome, but three stood out to me the most. First, was that Carla knew that the stigma of a mental illness would affect family members and the churches she attended. She explained that her husband did not tell her in-laws about her mental disease until after one of her in-laws developed a mental illness. Knowing that Carla had to hide her disease from her family was upsetting because mental illnesses should not be an issue that stays hidden.…

Many Australian people experience mental illness; however, according to the ABS (2013), Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are three times more likely to develop mental illness than the non-indigenous population. Mental illness among the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Stolen Generation survivors is even greater (Dudgeon, Walker, Scrine, Shepherd, Calma, & Ring, 2014). Suicide rates within the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities are also twice as high, more so in remote areas, compared to the non-Indigenous Australians (The Department of Health, 2013). In this essay, I will firstly identify the social and cultural factors that are associated with mental illness and suicide among the Aboriginal and Torres…
The major increase in psychiatric drugs prescribed by psychiatrists has raised some alarm among the screening community. Nathaniel Lehrman expresses his concerns about the overmedication of children as a result of mental health screenings in his article “Mental Health Screenings in Schools Can Harm Children”. He accomplishes this through the use of statistics such as, “[t]he sale of psychiatric medications―antipsychotics and antidepressants―rose from $500 million to $20 billion between 1987 and 2004, a 40-fold increase” (Lehrman). Lehrman uses this quote in the beginning of the article to grab the reader’s attention right away and pull them to his side with statistics about the immense overprescription of psychiatric medications. He follows…
Mark did not have many mental health problems in his early life. However, he did have a problem with wetting the bed until he was ten years old. The Diagnostic Statistic Manuel states that this is a mental health condition, called enuresis, if it lasts more than three months and if the individual is older than five years old. The manual also talks about how a stressful environment can play a part in causing this particular problem, which was what Mark experienced.…

The psychological person consists of cognition, emotion, and self identity (Hutchison 2013). Maisie is very emotionally unstable, and has little sense of identity.…
Risk Assessment in Mental Health Mental health services can manage risk and safety more effectively by involving service users in planning for safety. However, conventional clinical techniques of risk assessment are obstacles to creating normal and risk-free physical life for admitted and recovering mental health patients (Ratnayake, 2010). It is recommended that mental service givers and patients should work jointly to develop and implement effective risk management plans for mentally ill people to proceed with their normal lives (Morgan, 2013). In mental health care, professionals should assess patient risk on the wider context engulfing the interactions of the physical, psychological, spiritual and sociological wellbeing of the patient…
This article focuses on the families ' experiences of mental illness rather than the individual. Boschman explains that having an external party that has seen everything first hand is beneficial in the diagnosis process (2007). LeFrancois and Diamond would note that this actually delegitimizes the individual 's experiences as the individual cannot make sense of their experience for themselves because family members ' accounts are taken as truth (2014). This could also be because 'mentally ill ' individuals are often seen as not being able to take care of themselves. Both articles talk about the framework of performance, where a culturally dominant discourse that is biomedical is a produced effect that is shaped, formed, and reproduced within…
