I was about 9 years old when I first began cheering. Mid season my cheer coach told us we have this big end of the season cheer routine and she wanted us to begin practicing. It started off easy with a few jumps and spirit fingers, but then the difficult parts came. We had to all do cartwheels. I was never really good at cartwheels. I was not bad but was definitely not the best. I began practicing all the time doing cartwheels everywhere. My sisters had all been cheerleaders themselves and were helping me by critiquing my form. Over the years and years spent on studying mythology, Joseph Campbell came up with the concept of The Hero’s Journey. The Hero’s Journey states that all hero’s travel in a similar path and go through many similar stages that’ll lead them to their reward. However, not every hero’s journey has to involve obstacles as in slaying a dragon or trying to save the world. In my case, I had to do nothing but trying to make it through sixth grade year. Sadly, sixth grade was the year that I faced the most challenges, real world challenges at least.…

The best college students learn very quickly that the best thing that they can do is never give up, discover something new every day, work with the community as best as they can and show great respect for the learning community. They also learn that service to the community is essential and they do this by helping others and making them stronger learners. As an eighth grader, I had no choice but to balance out my school work, making sure to do all the chores, and taking care of my three younger siblings at home by myself. My parents would be up in the hospital taking care of my now passed grandmother, who had cancer, while I, being the oldest child in the family, had to stay home alone to take care of my younger siblings. At first it was a difficult task for my 12-year old self to handle. While I was doing my homework or studying, I would have to stop what I was doing and help my siblings on their homework. Another scenario would be me cleaning up the house, even though there were homework waiting for me on the table.…
