How To Describe Vimy Ridge

Mother I am currently at Vimy Ridge in the trenches. These trenches make me wish that I was back at home with you and sleeping in my own bed. There is dirt everywhere and menacing rats scurry the ground stealing whatever food we have. Those filthy creatures constantly make the soldiers sick. To go along with the rat infestations there is also the issue of “trench foot”. The trenches are blistering cold and damp. This makes our feet exposed to the looming bacteria. I pray every day that I do not contract this ghastly disease as it is quite gruesome to see. Yesterday one of the soldiers who had trench foot had to remove his boot because of all the dirt. The Germans had already captured the ridge and had a great view of the British Army. The Triple Entente had found it extremely difficult to capture the ridge. There were several failed attempts to capture Vimy Ridge. Britain eventually sought out our troops to aid them in conquering the ridge. We were led by Canadian Major-General Arthur Currie. He strategically planned out our attack by using aerial photos of Vimy. He created a realistic mock up of Vimy in order to aid the soldiers in preparation. Unlike many other British commanders he planned out the attacks in order to prevent several casualties. It began on Easter Monday, April 9, 1917. We maneuvered to the front lines using the creeping barrage. On April 12,1917 we got close to the front lines and used explosive warfare to break through the German front lines. We lost about four thousand men, yet we were very successful and managed to take over Vimy Ridge with ease.
