Going hand in hand with the mass incarceration of African-Americans is current their disenfranchisement. According to Michelle Alexander, this new Jim Crow has “disenfranchised [more] today than in 1870, the year the Fifteenth Amendment was ratified prohibiting laws that explicitly deny the rights to vote on the basis of race” (Alexander, 2011, p. 180). All but three states have some type of law prohibiting prisoners or even individuals who served their full sentences from voting in elections (Chung, 2015) so with African Americans being the largest group imprisoned, it also makes them the largest group that is disenfranchised.…
In conclusion, marijuana should be legalized nationally for both recreational and medical reasons because there are so many positive outcomes within decriminalizing the drug. Marijuana is a natural herb, and it is less dangerous than many other legal substances. If marijuana is regulated like tobacco and alcohol, but at a slight age difference of 25 then it can benefit the United States both economically and…
“In 2013, around 4.2 million people 12 and older had a marijuana abuse or addiction problem,” (Volkow par. 2). In Governing Magazine, State Marijuana Laws Map reveals that both Colorado and Washington legalized the use of marijuana in 2012. In the United States, twenty-three states have legalized Marijuana. Nineteen states have legalized marijuana for medical use only. Four states (Washington, Oregon, Colorado, and Alaska) have legalized the use of recreational marijuana.…
Are you ready to see your kids smoking marijuana regularly? So, this is the time to think about it because legalizing a drug like marijuana thoughtlessly seem easy, although, it will be a lot harder to put the genie back in the bottle than people seem to think once it goes predictably wrong down the…
I am not a user of marijuana, but it should be the only drug used for recreational use. Marijuana and cigarettes are highly similar but marijuana gives you a buzz feeling. Other drugs that involve injections or pills should not be allowed. These drugs lead to overdosing which then causes death. The reason why it leads to overdosing is because a normal person with little education on drugs is not going to know the correct amount to take.…
For decades, overcrowded prison populations have been at the top of the list for penal reform in the United States. The Federal Bureau of Prisons reports that nearly 85,500 individuals are currently incarcerated on drug-related charges, making up 46.4% of the total inmate population in our prison systems. Of those incarcerated on drug charges, nearly half are low-level drug offenders with no current or prior violence charges on their records. (The United States War on Drugs, n.d) Are criminalization and harsh punitive measures against these nonviolent offenders the root source of our overcrowded prison systems?…
Drugs have become one of the biggest problems in America today. Drug use has rapidly increased and we are seeing more and more deaths related to drugs, whether it being over dosing or killing while under the influence. Personally I think decriminalizing narcotics, so that they can be better monitored, will help the death rate do to drugs. The health and safety of the people is what is most important to America, and by decriminalizing narcotics we can lower HIV rates, help people who actually need drugs get them, users will know the correct amount of a drug to use, crime will be lowered, and less people will be in jail.…
Connecticut should not fully legalize marijuana because it has harmful effects on people. Taking in too much of it can wreck the lives and careers of millions of our citizens. Yet, marijuana remains the recreational drug of choice for millions of Americans. Critics of full legalizing it argue that the drug does more harm than good. Users of marijuana may experience both physical and psychological effects.…
Taking hard drugs slowly kills the mind and the body. For example with cocaine, short term hallucinations over time can lead to having a stroke or death. Drugs take a large toll on the body and they could cause harm to people around a user of them. But unfortunately, because of our justice system, drugs occasionally drag innocent people into court. Even acquiring miniscule amounts of drugs can ruin lives.…
Recreational Marijuana “Why is marijuana against the law? It grows naturally upon our planet. Doesn’t the idea of making nature against the law seem to you a bit . . . unnatural?” ―…
Marijuana should be Legal The legalization of marijuana is a huge topic of debate in our country. I think the main issue with the acceptance of marijuana is each person’s upbringing and lifestyle. Most believe this is a bad drug because that is how we were raised, with little research. My hope is that this information will open your eyes to the facts of marijuana.…
I strongly believe that marijuana needs to be legalized at both the state and federal levels. I feel that way because it’s no worse than alcohol in my eyes. Alcohol has been a huge problem- drunk drivers swerving everywhere on the roads and hitting people, just for the drunk driver to walk away. Marijuana does alter people’s cognitive abilities, but I don’t think it’s any worse than alcohol. I think some people that have decided against cannabis doesn’t understand what it can do for…
Legalize Marijuana One of the greatest debates across this country right now is the topic of whether or not marijuana should be legalized. Marijuana is currently legal in some forms in 23 different states. The majority of those states have legalized marijuana strictly for medicinal reasons, while in only four of those states is recreational use of marijuana legal. Marijuana, also known as cannabis, is commonly perceived as unattractive and useless to most Americans. They see it as addictive and a gate-way drug.…
Marijuana has the potential to actually be safer than alcohol or cigarettes. While it may seem hard to believe, no one has ever died directly from marijuana itself, as in an overdose. Also, the main chemical in marijuana, THC, is far less potent than that of alcohol. “A fatal marijuana overdose in humans would take 40,000 times the amount of THC that it took to get them high in the first place,” according to the New Health Guide (“New Health Guide”). Say that someone could get drunk on three beers; it would take 15-30 beers to kill them.…
Marijuana simply has no good reason to be illegal. It is important medicinally, it is already taken in moderation by the users, and all its worst negative effects can easily be countered. To bring up another point, it is also incredible for stress relief, and it is also a useful sleep aid to those with trouble sleeping. The drug should be legalized or, if nothing else, decriminalized. Countless people have been thrown in jail for possession of small amounts of one of the least harmful drugs, and some have even received life sentences for it!…
