Within the next ten years, more than one million registered nurses in the United States will be eligible for retirement. This will potentially leave the nursing profession with the largest shortage in history. The need for health care is only growing due to the aging baby boomer population. “Nursing researchers have noted that the projected nursing shortage, if not rectified, is expected to affect health care cost, job satisfaction and quality patient care” (Lartey, 2014, p. 1027). Without an adequate number of nurses’ patient safety is at risk, resulting in medical errors due to understaffing.…
The IOM future of nursing, have made essential proposals for the nurses to attain higher education to remain viably important in the evolving health care reform. I would use this paper to examine my fitting into the IOM Future of Nursing suggestions. IOM recommendation 4 underscores on the need to, “increase the proportion of nurses with a baccalaureate degree to 80 percent by 2020” (Institute of Medicine [IOM], 2010, p. 12). By God’s abundant grace, I will be one of the nurses who will be fitting into this recommendation since, I am expecting to receive my Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from the Grand Canyon University (GCU) well before 2020. A question I have asked myself many times before enrolling into the BSN program is: do you really…
There are three ways to become an RN: associate's degree, diploma, and bachelor's degree. If someone looking for a career with opportunity I would recommend the medical field. There is nothing more rewarding than to help somebody and look at them and see the appreciation on their face. Becoming a RN has been a dream of mine for over 20 years. I have been in the nursing field for the past 18 years, and with the prospect of becoming a Registered Nurse I will be in this field for many more years to come.…

Deciding to go back to school to complete the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program is a challenge for many nurses. I recognize the top two potential challenges for me are the time commitment and added expense. Similar to completing nursing school, deciding to complete the BSN program is going to be a team effort and all hands are going to need to be on deck. I am going to need support from family, friends, and coworkers in order to be successful. I am telling everyone who is close to me and cares about my future about why I am returning to school.…

I have this question only in case of any emergency situation if happen to me during nursing school. I honestly decide to continue with nursing as my major. I heard a lot that nursing is very hard. It is very competitive to get in to nursing school. I understand that none of the profession is easy, so I continue the prerequisites of nursing.…
These past few years, I have further refined my critical thinking skills when approaching nursing education and its processes while addressing the most critical issues, and increasing the number of students enrolled in a program. To bring this about, I had to prove myself, not only in my clinical acumen, but also in my verbal and written skills, team building ability and willingness to be an advocate for all students, prospective and current, as well as identifying and recruiting for nursing programs. What is more, these skills have increased my quantitative and statistical ability, skills that will prove invaluable in my doctoral research, not to mention the responsibility of educating nursing students. The students that will go forth and provide optimal care to the nation’s…
The 3D’s: Dedication, Determination, and Discipline Pursing a degree in nursing is by no means easy and has taught me what I refer to as the 3D’s: dedication, determination, and disciple. I am required to complete a total of 128 semester hours, 42 of which have to be part of my Foundations Curriculum. Fortunately, other than microbiology and its lab, organic chemistry, college algebra, introduction to sociology, and two psychology classes, I get to choose what foundation courses I take. Some of the ones I have chosen so far have been Art Appreciation, National Government, and Introduction to Theatre.…
Have you ever been a patient in the hospital and wondered what it would be like to be the doctor or a nurse? Doctors and nurses face many different challenges everyday. They are hard workers and they have dedicated their lives to save and improve other lives of many people. One type of a hard working nurse is a RN. RN stands for Registered Nurse.…
Yesterday I received a letter of dismissal from DePaul school of nursing. I am aware that my grades have been low for the last two semesters in which I take full responsibility. I write this appeal letter to explain the cause and ask you to please consider reinstating me. I wish to state that my poor grades are not due to low ability or not being able to retain the material. Neither was it procrastination to study.…
Being goal-oriented is considered one of the most important traits of an influential leader (Sullivan, 2013). Goals help individuals focus on the final target and keep them on track. Having goals give individuals feeling of control, and therefore, more motivation to take action toward their achievement. Daily steps toward goal achievement increase self-confidence and lead to the attainment of the final desired outcome (DeNisco & Barker, 2013). Sullivan (2013) states that while no one can control the future a person’s future is the result of his actions or inactions.…
Nursing, from the perspective of a first-year nursing student, is a profession that is underestimated. Nurses are the backbone of all health care facilities; without them, quality of care would greatly decrease. Through the influence of maternal figures in my family, along with an inherent interest in health care and a strong desire to care for others, I was drawn to the profession of nursing. However, a nurse requires more than merely an interest and the desire to care for others. During my first few months as a nursing student, my understanding of nursing, or lack thereof has come to light.…
The biggest explanation for this increased retirement age is due to the fact that the Baby Boomer generation is living longer . Medical advancements during the past several decades have been the main contributing factor in extending the average American’s life expectancy. “Thanks to major advances in medicine, fewer people die at an early age from heart disease and cancer. For example, the five-year cancer survival rate improved from 50 percent in the mid ‘70s (1975-1977) to 66 percent at the turn of the 21st century (1996-2002)” quoted by the American Hospital Association (Coye, DeMello, Joseph, & Ellington, 2007). Major chronic diseases have become less life threatening.…
