How To Become A Transformational Leader?

Decent Essays
The two areas I have decided that I need to further develop in order to become a transformational leader are my patience and how critical I am. Another way I might describe my critical thoughts and actions is by referring to it as “judgmental”. My struggle with patience is an internal one, and I am able to keep appearances as I become more and more irritable. Both areas I have marked for personal development are very hard to quantify. There is no metric for patience, nor is there a barometer for critical thoughts or actions. If I were forced to define the level of proficiency required for either trait I would have to respond “It depends”. But to ascribe a level of efficiency to the attributes, as requested I think back to my childhood and …show more content…
I am easily frustrated when others are not able to perform to my personal standards, and do typically do not believe that others can handle situations and work as well as I can. As a result I begrudgingly delegate tasks and take on the lion’s share myself. This habit leaves me tired, and my family picking up the slack from my absence (mentally or physically). An example of this behavior is evident in the group projects I was assigned this semester. I simultaneously organized the efforts of two group projects. Because I have had bad experiences in the past, I put myself in a position to do the lion’s share, even though these groups were filled with new individuals whom I had never before met. I judged their performance based on the performance of others to whom they have no connection. In the future, I would like to be able to be more relaxed, patient, and trusting when taking on these types of projects. I believe that by becoming more patient, I will naturally become less critical of others, so first I will focus on patience. To do this I plan on focusing on the symptoms (MindTools, 2014). When I feel that I am being impatient, short, or critical, I will apologize to myself and/or to others, understand what better action I might take, (body language, tone of voice etc.) correct myself, and begin again. Another action I am taking to fight against this beast on my back is to understand the reason …show more content…
These are troublesome traits I carry and I wish nothing more than to cast them out and replace them with healthier ones. Realistically I need to have an expert handle my impatience and judgment by the time I am finished with my first year of law school, roughly mid 2017. That is when I will be able to take on internships with law offices and be faced with clients that may stretch my understanding of patience and kindness. In order to have such a handle I should break down my goals into manageable increments and slowly improve my skills until I am proven proficient. I believe that it is reasonable to strive for a six-month window to work on these

My Personal Leadership Philosophy and How it has Developed As a leader I am very unique. I hold strong personal values in the areas of trust, respect, and responsibility. Prior to this course, I perceived leaders as people who told a group of people what to do in order to accomplish a task. When I was put in a leadership position I was always effective, but I never really took the thoughts or feelings of others into consideration.…

Before delving further into leadership and management theories and styles it is good to understand the difference between a manager and a leader. Bennis and Nanus (1985, p221) state that ‘managers are people who do things right and leaders are people that do the right thing.’ Yukl (2002, p7) goes on to suggest that leadership is the process of influencing others to understand and agree about what needs to be done and how it can be done effectively, and the process of facilitating individual and collective efforts to accomplish the shared objectives. However, Stodgill (1974:7) powerfully stated that ‘there are as many definitions of leadership as there are persons who have tried to define it.’ Although there are varying definitions to leadership…
