How To Become A Probation Officer

Decent Essays
Heather,
First off I wanted to say I am sorry about your family member that his probation revoked. I thankfully have never had to go through seeing someone in my family, or a friend who has had to go through the probation process. In addition, from your story it sounds lie your family members probation officer did everything she could to help him. Finally I could imaging, especially in cases of working with teenagers, that the job as a probation officer would become extremely emotionally tiring. Thank you for sharing your story.

117). In the following essay, in addition to further discussing the characteristics of successful probation supervision, I will discuss motivational interviewing (MI) as an evidence-based approach to supervision, and its effectiveness. By implementing motivational interviewing into their practices of supervision, probation officers enable themselves to build interpersonal connections between themselves and probationers, and properly consider the specific needs and risk posed by probationers through conversation in a way that demonstrate both control (through change) and assistance (through assessment), thus satisfying the three characteristics of successful probation supervision. In successful probation supervision, a probation officer will ensure the establishment and maintenance of rapport. Rapport encourages the offenders (probationers) to open up to the officer, which enhances the officers capacity to effectively monitor the compliance of probation conditions and intervene on a continues basis to prevent the escalation of problems (Skeem & Manchak, 2008, p. 224).…

Most probationers and probation officers of the same sex will not be tempted to engage in any sexual activities. They could also require that two probation officers are present during visits/meetings since the temptation of engaging in sexual activity will diminish being that another officer is present. They can also rotate out different probation officers over the course of an offender’s probation in order to decrease the likelihood of sexual relationships from forming. Not only should the department strongly encourage the public to anonymously tip off authorities regarding sexual relations between probationers and probation officers, they should also have something for all probation officers to anonymously report misconduct within the department if they are too afraid to speak out against it and break the code of silence. Although these ideas would be somewhat difficult to organize and put into action, it will minimize the issue of relationships forming amongst probation officers and their…

I’ve seen too many friends fall into the wrong path and make some awful life changing decisions. Before the end of my high school career I had witnessed individuals from groups around me participate in gang shoot outs, fights, distribution and usage of drugs. As I’ve seen my peers commit crimes and were introduced into the criminal system, I thought to myself that the negative effects brought by my peers has taken a substantial impact on our community. I questioned, if their own teachers and friends won't bother to help then who will? Troubled youth need a role model who can be strong willed to help them make a better future for themselves, search for a purpose in life, and won't give up on them like everybody else did.…

Overcrowding has caused more ex-offenders to be released on parole or probation. Parole officers do not have good relationships with parolees because there are too many for them to handle. According to Vera Institute of Justice (2013), In the 1970’s parole officers supervised an average caseload of 45 parolees. By 2003, parole officers were responsible for approximately 70 parolees, and probation officers for 130 probationers (p. 11). The parole officers rather try to find the parolee in violation of parole and send them back prison.…

It's not a bad thing that police officers go to bars and have a few drinks to unwind from a day’s work, however saying this a probation officer should stay away from the bars that their probationers frequently visit because it would clash with their work responsibilities and their person life. If a probation officer and a probationer start to hang out and even build a friendship that isn't work related it can harm the way the probation officer handles situations concerning the probationer. If their other probationers start to think their probation officer is playing favoritism and treat their probation officer with disrespect, which causes more problems with the probation officer doing his job which will involve his boss. A possibility of this…

I enjoy reading your post. I agree with you if a probation violation is discovered and reported, it is likely that the court will conduct a probation revocation hearing. If the defendant violated probation by breaking a law, the probation revocation hearing will probably take place after the new offense has been disposed of. If the violation was not a new criminal offense but nevertheless broke a condition of probation (for instance, socializing with people the judge prohibited the defendant from contacting), then the revocation hearing may take place as soon as practicable after the violation is reported. Defendants are entitled to written notification of the time, place, and reason for the probation revocation hearing.…

The probation officer has a dual responsibility to the wellbeing of his parolee and at the same time the safety of the community, but his concern for his parolee should dominate. In general, the parole officer role is to represent his parolee’s best interest as long as his parolee does not pose a threat to the public (Gagnon v. Scarpelli, 411 U.S. 778 (1973).…
